Rising Stars: Meet Reem Unknown

Today we’d like to introduce you to Reem Unknown.

Hi Reem, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I’m Dre. Most people know me as Reem Unknown or Reem. I’m from Northeast Baltimore. I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember. It was something that I always liked doing and was something I was always good at. I used to wanna be a game designer and animator when I was a kid. Always liked to doodle and daydream which got me in trouble at school a lot.

I initially came into the scene in 2016 as a beatmaker/producer but I leaned more into art when I started going to Morgan State to study multimedia studio. I think that’s when I realized I wanted to go further with art more than I did the music.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Growing up here had its obstacles but I made out pretty okay. I got a good family and support system that kept me grounded. I think my biggest challenges artistically were being confident in the work I produce and being disciplined enough to work consistently and get better. I still struggle with those but it’s a day-by-day thing, you feel me?

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I mostly work in Copic marker and ink, and digital illustration. I’ve been experimenting a lot with oil pastel and oil paint as well. I like to try everything out at least once. I try to bring the two together whenever I can.

Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I like the most about Baltimore is the people. We all have a never-say-die attitude towards life even when things aren’t going our way. We’re very prideful and even a little boastful, but it’s really inspiring and makes me wanna go further in life and put on for the city.

On the flip side it’s hard to garner support from other locals sometimes. There’s a crab in a bucket mentality here too and it’s holding a lot of talented people back.
