Rising Stars: Meet Rachel Cooper

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel Cooper.

Hi Rachel, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
At fifteen years old, I borrowed my family’s camera and found that if I took photos at local band shows, I could get in for free. For the next three years, I fell in love with photography.

Photographing bands quickly turned into photographing tours and the lifestyle that came with being on the road. I spent a few years while working my way through college hopping on whatever tour I could just for the chance to travel and take photos of the touring experience.

Following a few years of traveling on and off, I settled down in Baltimore, MD, and adopted a dog. Since coming off the road, I’ve fallen in love photographing just about everything: from pets to portraits to couples to elopements to weddings. I love capturing a moment and a feeling.

Whether it’s confidence, happiness, love, or adorableness, I’m all about it.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Overall, my experience as a photographer has always been pretty pleasant. I am thankful for my clients, and I love what I do.

With that being said, it can be tough to set personal boundaries for yourself as a photographer, especially in the digital age. I used to really struggle with saying “no” to taking photos of things I didn’t want to photograph.

While I love to take photos, certain types of photography spark less joy for me. Recently, I made the decision to only offer family sessions to repeat clients or families I knew prior to booking.

Pricing has also always been something that I’ve felt torn over. Price increases are inevitable after years of experience, and while I value my time and know that I’m worth my pricing, it can be disappointing to be outside of someone’s budget.

It’s difficult to decide what is accessible for your ideal client while also pricing yourself appropriately for the high-quality work you do.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I specialize in photographing lifestyle, love, pets, and portraits. I specialize in capturing a moment exactly how it was. Working with me is all about connection, comfort, and a good sense of humor.

My clients feel comfortable working with me and are left with photographs that make their hearts happy.

How do you define success?
Success is having the option, every day, to do something you love doing.
