Rising Stars: Meet Milly Vanderwood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Milly Vanderwood.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, I’m not a visual artist for the simple fact that I don’t draw or paint, but a lot of people say my art is the way I help and bring people together. My art gallery/creative space is a big, physical piece of art displaying hundreds of art pieces. I got to this point in my life by doing what I wanted to do and not being afraid to do it. It all started in 2015; I had 4-5 business partners… we got some office space for meetings and creative activities, nothing too crazy.

I was managing a visual artist at the time, and he had some of his art hanging on the wall, and I looked around like, “Hey, this could be an art gallery!” — Two months later, that’s exactly what I turned it into. Fast forward, five years later, I’ve hosted 400+ events, opened the world’s first ‘Mini Hip-Hop Museum,’ and helped numerous visual artists to be seen + make money from their art. Along the way, I’ve learned that you can’t trust or depend on many people and that being an entrepreneur is a lot of hard work and dedication! I love what I do. I wouldn’t trade it for the world. You also can’t let too many people in on your vision because their mistakes could ultimately mess up what you’ve built. My main brand, ‘The Gallery About Nothing’ is one of a kind art gallery/creative space and you won’t find anything like it in the world! Visit us soon!

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not a smooth road at all, but I’ve loved every minute of it! After I quit my job and started working for myself, I was sleeping in the car and at my gallery a lot. The main struggle that has been reoccurring is building different teams of people to work together and folks not getting along with each other, seeing the bigger pictures, etc. I’ve had to build new teams with new people just about every year, but hey, I can’t complain one bit. Things happen!

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m an art dealer and I run an art gallery. I help artists, I build brands and I bring people together. I’m very proud of my abilities to make these things happen! I’m reliable, responsible & hardworking. I accomplish more things in one day than most people accomplish all year, lol.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Just do it! Don’t wait around, don’t complain and don’t expect anyone to help you out! Turn those dreams into reality and live your best life! Many things are possible!
