Rising Stars: Meet Michele Blu

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michele Blu.

Hi Michele, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
I am a Baltimore-based Kemetic Yoga teacher, Owner of Michele Blu Yoga & Art Studio, I have been on my 9-5 job for 18 years now only working part-time in the Construction industry.

Yoga has been a part of my life for 23 years and my practice has helped me grow stronger, flexible, and fearless both on and off my yoga mat. I started yoga by recommendation of a doctor due to chronic back trouble and talk of back surgery. Testimony “23 years later no back surgery, no back trouble.” after taking my 1st class I knew that this would become a lifestyle for me. “the best-kept secret” I called it. Growing up in Baltimore city born and raised, I discovered that it was a myth that yoga was only for white people and after my 1st class, my goal became to share and expose as many folks as possible (especially those of color & from my hood) & abroad to yoga.

I opened my 1st yoga studio in 2008 after my 1st 500 hr. teacher training certification in power yoga & hot power yoga, during the midst of a recession. We were the 1st black-owned & operated yoga studio in Baltimore city and our story was covered on fox 45 news. As times changed and life grew so did I. I became 200 hr. hatha yoga certified, and 2 years later I gained an extra 100 hrs. Making me 300 hr. Hatha yoga instructor based on my skills, dedication, discipline, and devotion! That year I also inquired about 200 hr. casework in the theory & practice of asana, yoga philosophy, anatomy, and basic teaching.

However, it wasn’t until 2018 I found Kemetic yoga, or should I say it found me.

I have my 200 hr. Kemetic yoga certification. Then 2019 I went abroad to Negril, Jamaica to receive my master’s certification under master instructor Yirser Ra Hotep of Kemetic yoga skills school of Kemetic yoga. I will always be a student of this practice and I am deeply grateful to my teachers and every human being that I have had the opportunity to share this practice with. What you can expect from my classes?

What can you expect from my class? “Michele is known for her authentic, non-judgemental style of teaching, availing herself to continuous philosophical education from the kemetic yoga spirituality.”

Before becoming a yoga instructor, I was a personal trainer. Because of my extensive background in fitness, I thought yoga would be easy after my first class. It was not as easy as I imagined, but the true surprise – the best-kept secret – was the sense of calmness and peace I found and the breath-mind-body-spirit relationship I built. Kemetic Yoga is creating space free from obstacles in our own bodies to live.

I weave through-provoking meditations throughout the class, applying ancient wisdom to the contemporary western world in a useful and understanding way. I encourage the growth of the physical and spiritual self, citing the interconnectedness to our ancestors, our community, the World, and the Universe at large!

In class, I love to combine creative Kemetic sequences, a spirit of playfulness, and a dose of inspiration to help develop or deepen your practice. I seek to help others thrive in life by nurturing the body-mind-spirit and soul with yoga. My overall goal is that you step off the mat feeling refreshed, nourished, and balanced!

What is Kemetic Yoga? The Ancient Egyptian system of yoga was based on the enlightenment based upon the practices of physical movements combined with controlled deep breathing and meditation.

Kemetic Yoga is a healing regenerative system that is characterized by a series of geometrically progressive postures that create alignment of the spinal column and correct defects in the skeletal muscular system in order to relieve stress, increase blood circulation, nutrient and oxygen supply to vital body systems, and to allow internal life for energy and cerebral spinal fluid to flow more efficiently and abundantly throughout the entire body.

Whereby inculcating the philosophy of self-development, healing of the Mind-Body-Spirit, and self-discovery!

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Bad decisions lead to a bad business deal which left me in a financial bind and no place to teach for a period of time

Lack of support & resources.

Baltimore City Zoning.

Managing & maintaining the website, emailing all the social media platforms that drive customers to my business.

Not having a team/support system – Outside of my mom sewing I am a one-woman show, wearing many hats can be quite challenging and all over the place especially when my creativity does not stop. So many ideas and visions.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
It has resulted in personal tragedy for many from health to finances if I want to focus on the negative aspects, but on a more positive note, I’ve learned that it brought families closer together and people are making healthier conscious choices and lifestyles.

Ex: Some of my students have been trying for months even years to get their loved ones and friends to come to yoga with them, since Covid they have been more open and have given yoga a try and some have become regular students.
