Rising Stars: Meet Lauren Bellcase

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lauren Bellcase.

Hi Lauren, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
I have always loved taking pictures. You’d find a camera in my hand during vacations, events, and even just hanging out. I joke that my own terrible memory is why I want a lot of photos, but having memories to look back on is important to me. I started studying under Kathy Ricker of Love & Adventure Photography in 2016. If you haven’t heard of her, definitely go check her out! She offers wedding and family photography (and guided safari tours!) and is absolutely amazing. My partner and I did a new home photoshoot with her and I loved her style. Initially, I was working just to improve my own photos and to get better photos of the kids. Then 2020 happened. I was bored at home for a couple months and, after Animal Crossing lost its shine, decided to give myself something productive to do. I officially launched Lauren B Photography in August 2020!

Mixed into all this is our goal to ‘FIRE’ – reach financial independence and retire early. For my partner and I, that means quitting our day jobs so we can do what we love. While doing nothing is the goal for many working towards FIRE, building a successful photography business became my goal. I started really digging into both photography and business education. Upgrading my gear was definitely the best part! Pursuing my passion is a privilege and I’m grateful every day that I get to do something I love.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I’m an extrovert but I still get nervous before every wedding, session, and event. Confidence behind the camera, interacting with clients, and creating that final product in post-processing can only come from practice. Every time I pick up my camera, I have the opportunity to learn. There are always going to be things that discourage you. I try to be open to what those moments can teach me and use them to become a better photographer.

The value of a creative’s work in today’s digital world is also an obstacle. Everyone connects with different styles, types of content, and personalities. People are used to “free” entertainment and the behind-the-scenes work is forgotten. There are real people spending real time, money, and effort creating that content. Every creative I know is constantly studying, practicing, and perfecting their craft. It is passion-based work but it is still work and deserves to be valued.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
“Telling your story and showcasing the authentic you” is what I do. I like to say that every session with me is an adventure – an adventure designed specifically for “you.” I’m known for connecting with my clients so they feel comfortable and confident in front of the camera. We’ll share bad jokes and dance breaks. I’ll share the stories behind my body art, like the incredible steampunk piece that contains a tribute to my grandfather. We’ll make memories while capturing them.

Some of my favorite shoots, which you could also say I’m most proud of, are my female empowerment lifestyle sessions. These aren’t just for women, though! I’ve worked with singer-songwriters, models, writers, and those just looking to do something special for themselves. I make it my purpose to bring their vision to life! Every detail is meticulously planned – locations, outfits, hair, makeup, posing – so their dream becomes reality. The real success comes from my clients seeing themselves in a new light…and breathtaking black & whites. I love hearing “Oh my gosh, that can’t be me!” because I get to definitively say, yes…it is.

I recently made the leap to weddings, which was exhilarating and terrifying! You don’t want to miss a moment; there are no do-overs, but it has been so fulfilling. My couples say that I was exactly who they needed. From making sure that everyone is hydrated before the party starts, to keeping the unruliest attendants in line for photos, I have it covered so the couple only remembers the fun. Building that connection sets me apart and results in stunning photos. I believe love is love is love, and I love capturing the story of such a special day.

How do you think about happiness?
When my clients love their photos! I know it’s cheesy but it’s true. When a couple smiles at the love shining in their eyes and laughs at the antics of their friends and family. When a family gets the photo to hang on the wall and the has-to-be-shared kids not doing what they’re told snap. When someone who swears they’ve never liked a single photo of themselves, starts to see a new perspective. Photography is powerful. One of my favorite quotes comes from the legendary Ansel Adams – You don’t take a photograph, you make it. I love how photography pushes me to be constantly learning, challenging, and growing. The best feeling is knowing my clients love and will treasure their photos forever. I hope you’ll join me on this adventure and let me tell your story.
