Rising Stars: Meet Kay Martin

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kay Martin.

Hi Kay, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started baking in 2009 after getting tired of all the formalities and travel time to the bakery on the other side of town. I also worked in the restaurant industry for seven years, which helped developed my skills.

I moved to New York in 2013 to join my husband. I began baking for child birthday parties and being a sponsor for local celebrity events. After doing a lot of Networking, I built and name and reputation for myself. From there, I was given opportunities to vend at large-scale events such as New York Fashion week.

I also had the opportunity to create a custom cupcake for Raekwon and Ghostface of the Wu-Tang Clan. This Cupcake was so popular that Godshall’s Quality Meats offered me a Sponsorship and a live show slot at Philly Food Expo main stage. I was recently a Greatest Baker Competition Group Runner Up. And I’ve baked for many celebrities such as: P. Diddy, Marsha Ambrosius, Wu-Tang, Jordan Tesfay, Jack Thriller, Eric Sermon.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road at all. Baking is a very expensive and stressful industry. You have to have very tough skin to compete in competition. Customers are not always your customers. And not every customer is willing to pay you what you are worth. Also, trying to work a full-time job and bake on the side has its own share of difficulties as well. In addition to financial struggles, it can also be a struggle with ingredients, specifically Vanilla. Pure Vanilla Extract has become very expensive. Also, dairy product pricing also fluctuates, and customers do not always understand when your pricing has to change due to these ingredient increases.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I’m a Baker who specializes in gourmet cupcakes. I’m most proud of being a self-taught Baker and have had the ability to get my products to many celebrities in New York. My cupcakes stand out because I have successfully paired Southern Hospitality with Hip Hop influence which has made my products very intriguing.

I am a new Mom, Wife and US Veteran.
