Rising Stars: Meet Jai Cousins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jai Cousins.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My name is Jai Cousins.

I officially launched Donisha Clothing Company doing business as The Real Propaganda in September 2021. The idea came to me in 2018 so this is years in the making. Donisha Clothing Company is a high-end unisex streetwear clothing brand. Currently, we are specializing in sublimation graphic tees.

Each item has a satirical or political message. I design all the graphics and do the manufacturing myself. Right now I am an online store but hope to have a storefront in the future.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
This has been a bumpy ride. In 2018, when I started making the graphics, I had trouble coming up with signature ideas. Once I got my formula down and organized images, I wanted to depict them on t-shirts I made designs every day for two years straight.

In the meantime, I was trying to decide if I wanted to find a manufacturer or do it myself, but I ended up doing the latter. I was also gathering funds at this time to launch the business. That was very difficult. I had to do a lot of research on supplies and software I needed to make a shirt. I did extensive research on which printer I would use and which ink.

I mean I have hundreds of messed-up shirts with backward logos, upside-down designs, too small images you name it. When I first started, I ordered 100 shirts that were the wrong material for the ink I was using. That was the biggest drawback of sourcing a stylish shirt made of the correct material.

Sublimation ink requires polyester and it cannot be used on cotton at all.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I specialize in the sublimation graphic tees.

I consider it art because if you know anything about sublimation then you know it lasts forever. I set myself apart from others because each shirt I make has a political message. One may not get it at first glance but it’s there.

I want my t-shirts to spark conversation and ultimately make people consider life from a different viewpoint. All the while the items are very stylish and can be worn anywhere.

What would you say has been one of the most important lessons you’ve learned?
The most important lesson I learned along this journey is you cannot expect anyone you know to support you. The very first t-shirt I sold was from a complete stranger.

  • All t-shirts are currently priced at $45
