Rising Stars: Meet Irv Wright

Today we’d like to introduce you to Irv Wright.

Hi Irv, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
After 45 yrs. in the men’s clothing industry, I retired in 2020. My passion for fashion did not keep me retired long. I started working in a small men’s boutique in DC part-time and recently assisted in the opening of a 2nd location in Baltimore. But I was still missing a greater fulfillment. So, I took a hat-making course in NYC and after much thought and soul searching, I decided to launch my own custom hat line, using old-world techniques to craft fine bespoke hats. They will be all handcrafted and hand-stitched using only the finest fabrics. I fell in love with hats through old black and white gangster movies from the ’30s and ’40s. I decided to pay tribute to the era by creating one hat at a time.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Since I’m in the infancy of launching my brand, it’s been pretty smooth, over the last couple of months I’ve had dozens of requests to make a hat. The most difficult part has been laying the groundwork for setting up a business.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I was a consultant for clients and a sales trainer for my teams. I’d say I’m most proud of passing down to the next generation the art of dressing well. Guiding them through the understanding of fashion vs style.

How do you think about happiness?
Seeing the joy in someone’s face when they see themselves in a new light just by putting on a suit. It becomes sort of their armor. Sometime sweat pants and a hoodie just can’t give them.
