Rising Stars: Meet Imani Pittmon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Imani Pittmon.

Hi Imani, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.

There are 2 sides to my story. First, I’ll begin with baking. Since I was a child, I’ve always enjoyed baking and trying different cupcake flavors. I remember that my mom used to always bake a yellow cake with chocolate icing, although I do not like chocolate, the cake was always amazing. This started my obsession with cakes, mainly cupcakes because they are smaller and easier to make.

The 2nd part of my story is about my nursing journey. I started my journey to become a nurse 8 years ago and while it was a long journey it was well worth it. I graduated from Bowie State University with a Bachelor’s in Nursing in 2014 after that I began my career as an ER nurse and continued to work there until I graduated from Marymount University in 2019 with my Master’s of Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner in 2019.

I began working in the fall of 2019 a couple of months before the pandemic. During the pandemic, I decided to use my free time constructively doing something that I love to do which is baking cupcakes! That’s when @TheBaking_NP was created!

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
Honestly, overall, I would say as far as business goes, the journey has been smooth and well received by my customers and supporters. I began baking during the holiday season, but it has since progressed to custom orders.

My first official baking season was the winter of 2021 and I underestimated, how long it was going to take to bake.

Thankfully, I had assistance from my mom and friend Kiara but even with all the help I still was up pretty late baking overall it was a good experience and learning lesson.

I have been learning to not undersell my value and to charge customers appropriately for my hard work and time.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a full-time Nurse Practitioner. It truly is my calling, I enjoy taking care of patients and having a strong impact on their lives. I am currently working in telemedicine and it has truly been a blessing, it has greatly improved my work/life balance.

As far as baking, I usually bake on the weekends for events. Unfortunately, I suffered a knee injury in February, and I had to stop baking for a couple of months, however, now, I am at about 90% as far as my knee and I am now able to stand again for long periods of time, so I can finally get back to baking!

I’ve taken a few cakes decorating classes I am always eager to try and learn new things.

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The Covid-19 crisis has taught me many lessons.

As a healthcare worker, I was furloughed during the pandemic, which is something I never thought would happen. But it taught me to be more grateful for being able to sustain my home and living during that time because so many other people were not. It was definitely a humbling experience

The pandemic also allowed me to hone in on my passion for baking, which has blossomed into my small business. It allowed me time to slow down and focus on doing things that make me happy.
