Rising Stars: Meet Faraji Jacobs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Faraji Jacobs.

Hi Faraji, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story starts with my father being heavily involved in the music industry on the business side, so it was already embedded in me. When I was nine, my cousin wrote a rap for me and taught me how to write my own. Ever since then, we started making music together, coming from whatever I was influenced by. Met my homie Buffa7o and that’s when I really started finding my sound and honing in on my craft with our group Black Sheep Refugee. Being from Baltimore has given me a different outlook on things and living back and forth in New York has had a major impact on my lyricism and ability to tell stories through music.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I struggle with being super critical of myself, which can stunt the growth and natural flow of the process of just creating art and releasing it out into the universe. Also, struggle with keeping a balance with work and personal life and being lower-middle-class person that has millions of things to worry about everyday.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a rap-based genre-bending artist that specializes in lyricism and melodies known for raw, inciteful lyrics. I’m most proud of the progress I’ve made as an artist (especially in the past three years). I’m not trying to be anything that these other rappers are talking about, it’s a matter of doing. My natural knack for what I do isn’t forced, I don’t try – I just do.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Spending time with my father, being around so much musical energy as he worked in the music industry.
