Rising Stars: Meet Eryk Abbey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Eryk Abbey.

Hi Eryk, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
For as long as I could remember, I’ve always loved locs!!

My granddad had them when I was growing up & I would always ask “can I have locs too?” but my mom loved her boy with his lowcut & deep waves, lol.

But I always knew it was something about them that had me intrigued. So eventually in 2009, I started my loc journey & I’ve been locked in ever since.

I would maintain my granddad’s & a few other relatives from time to time. In 2017, I attended cosmology school & then started studying the anatomy of hair. Once I finished school, I still felt incomplete but wasn’t quite sure if the hair was something I truly wanted to focus on.

So, I continued working full-time. In March 2022, I had a deep conversation with myself & said “You really need to tap in with what makes you happy, what makes you feel good, what makes you want to go to work” & all I could say to myself was “it’s time” that’s when “The Midas Touch DC” was born.

Here we are in July 2022 & The Midas Touch DC has been satisfying the needs of all loc loves in the DMV area.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No road is a smooth road, and honestly, I’ve learned that you have to truly love what you do for it not to become so trying.

No, every day wasn’t easy but with God, my faith & support system I had to push through.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a loctician servicing the DMV area. I specialize in natural hair care, loc maintenance, and loc styling & I am most known for the cleanliness of my work.

I’m most proud of my determination & growth. It’s not easy to jump into the game & literally stay consistent. And I don’t mean not working every day. I mean continuously pushing yourself /your brand every day.

You’re going to have moments where you feel like “maybe this isn’t for me “when no, maybe that client wasn’t for you. And that there are plenty of people watching, willing & waiting to be a part of your destiny. The Midas Touch isn’t just a brand, it’s a lifestyle.

I love the fact that I can connect with people from all walks of life. It feels good knowing that people see you from their own perspective. I make sure I connect with all of my clients.

I’m all about hair care, styling will come. That alone sets me apart from others because it’s hard to find a stylist that truly cares about the health of your hair & not the money. All of my clients have gotten to experience my “growing hands”.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I’m a risk taker to a certain extent, lol. I play “Double Dutch” a lot with myself & honestly most times it was because of self-doubt. We’re our biggest critics.

So, I feel like that’s “normal” but all in all, I have learned nothing will ever happen good or bad without taking risks. You may stumble but what’s the worst that can happen outside of growth?

I definitely took a major risk with starting the Midas Touch DC. In the middle of a pandemic along with inflation. It’s a troubling time we’re living in now. God always has my back though.
