Rising Stars: Meet Danny Gorsky

Today we’d like to introduce you to Danny Gorsky.

Hi Danny, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I got into music about 7 years ago out of a desperate need to fill my time without getting high after getting out of a rehab program. Music was my first sober outlet that I found that I could really sink my teeth into and it almost immediately became a replacement addiction for me, dragging my bandmates to 4 open mics a week and practicing/jamming as much as humanly possible. In my first band, Mosquito Drone, it was often difficult to get booked to shows when we first started playing so out of necessity I learned how to book my own gigs and eventually created my own booking and promotion agency, Death Throes Booking.

I never intended on making my own company, I stumbled into it. At the time, my main focus was being a musician, whereas now if anything, I am more active with my booking and promotion than I am as a performer. Between my Death Throes shows and the gigs at my house, HELL Takoma Park I am very busy but also very grateful to have the opportunity and luck to pull off these projects.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It most definitely has not been a smooth road, however I don’t think anyone’s path is easy in the long run and I also don’t know if I would want it any other way. So many of the moments and projects in my career that I am grateful for are a direct result of the grit I had to put in overtime to attain these goals. I have found that the best favor anyone ever did for me was not booking my band and not supporting my work because if not for that I would not have learned to be self sufficient so early on in this world of music and art.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a musician and small business owner. I am the lead singer of a DC Hardcore band called GRISHKA and I am the manager of Death Throes Booking. With Death Throes I put together shows for mainly extreme metal and punk acts. Most of my booking is based in Washington DC but I also book gigs in Baltimore and Richmond. I think being a good promoter/talent booker is easy because it doesn’t as much involve skill as it does dedication and integrity. In a world where so many pay to play promoters are still coercing local openers into selling tickets for them I am very proud to be throwing shows the right way and truly taking care of both the talent and audience. By paying artists honestly and taking care of basic hospitality needs I find there is no need for taking unethical P2P shortcuts. A positive reputation will attract higher profile acts to book shows and with high profile bands the shows often sell themselves with no need for sketchy, townie, scam promotion.
