Rising Stars: Meet Bethany Gallagher of BALTIMORE

Today we’d like to introduce you to Bethany Gallagher.

Hi Bethany, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I started as a linguistics major at University of Pittsburgh and found my passion when I started volunteering at a camp for children w autism. I then added speech and language pathology to my schooling and moved to Baltimore for grad school. I began working with medically fragile children and realized how many need help eating as well as communicating. The NICU pulled me and I that was it. I loved working with mother-baby dyads and watching them thrive together. I pursued my IBCLC and through having my own children realized how much in home help is needed.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road is completely smooth:). Struggle along the way are realizing how many people have limited resources and need assistance utilizing one’s available to them.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What sets me apart from most lactation specialists is that I am also an SLP. I can provide billing for either service and also bring the expertise of both disciplines to each child I work with. I am also a certified neonatal therapist and while I cannot treat all developmental or medical issues I can certainly recognize them and provide recommendations. I also have years of experience working with older children with a variety of feeding issues from picky eaters to medically complex feeding issues.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
I see people acknowledging feeding issues and addressing them much sooner in a child’s life instead of putting it off as ‘normal’. I also see a resurgence of human milk is best for infants and additional support for families being provided.
