Rising Stars: Meet Athena

Today we’d like to introduce you to Athena.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
My journey started in the beauty world as a model in Baltimore, MD. When I was 22, I moved to Los Angeles, California to take my modeling career further. It was an amazing experience and I got the chance to be a part of a lot of great things. Although there were great opportunities the cost of living was sometimes a struggle. I started to do my own makeup for shoots and do my friends’ makeup when we would go out and I realized how much I love it! I loved the behind the scene glam! This sparked my interest in learning more. I started teaching myself and taking classes on how to perfect my makeup application. I moved back home to Maryland a few years later and as soon as I moved back the pandemic started. This put the fire under me that I needed! At the time I settled for a corporate job where I was completely miserable! I would cry every day at work trying to figure out a business I could start. I knew that I’m good at a lot of things but it still hadn’t clicked for me until one day it came to me what I truly enjoy doing. I was talking to my stylist one day while getting my hair done and she shared with me that she was opening a beauty bar! At that moment I knew this was my chance to jump out there! She offered me a position as a manager and a makeup artist and this is where my journey began as a professional makeup artist!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
So far things have been good! I would say minor struggles would be that the world is still going through so many changes with covid and sometimes this can be a lot! One week may be super busy one week may be super slow. Also still have to be very cautious. Just being a makeup artist isn’t always easy because most of your clients are getting serviced for a special occasion, so there are slow seasons. Keeping up with cost products is also sometimes a challenge if you are in slow season. These challenges have only encouraged me to go harder and come up with ways to expand my business.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am The Glam Goddess! I specialize in full glam and brow shaping and tinting. I offer makeup one on one training and also have my own cosmetics like called Glam Goddess Cosmetics! I am most proud of starting my cosmetics line because I have thought about it for so long and didn’t know where to start. I felt so overwhelmed and one day I just did it! I’m so proud of it because it is such great quality! I believe this sets me apart from others as well as my personality! I’ve always been told I have a magnetic personality. I also pride myself on great customer service and that’s something I feel is missing sometimes in my generation.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I absolutely have taken major risk! I quit my full-time job with full benefits where I was comfortable. I was miserable working there but I knew it was a comfort zone and I had to take a risk to get where I want to be. I will continue to take risk until I have hit any goal I have.
