AL99 is a multitalented hip-hop, trap soul, boom bap, pop-soul, singing, and instrumentalist guitarist, producer, engineer, and songwriter. He has no limits, incorporating Jazz sounds and Gospel rhythms into his beats! His fans call him “Versatile AL” and his peers call him the “GENIUS”!
His artist’s name is pronounced “AL nine-nine”, and is derived from his first name and birth year. He has cultivated his skills through hands-on experience, working with musicians of varying backgrounds.
He has further honed his professional skills by earning degrees in Audio Production and Music Business. An artist of many talents, he composes and writes his music, plays the guitar and keyboard, and mixes and masters his music, solely on his own. He is working on his way to becoming one of the great HIP Hop producers in the industry. Studying the great producers such as Quincy Jones, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, and Swizz Beatz, he has learned from the best! He is also the owner of his label, TPC Music Production.
AL99 is a seasoned performer, and has performed in venues from coast to coast including Washington, D.C., New York City, Brooklyn, NY; Harlem, NY; New Jersey, Phoenix, AZ, and Baltimore, MD. During this 50 years of Hip-Hop worldwide celebration, he has performed his single “IDOLS” off his “Mind, Body, Spirit” project at most shows paying homage to the greats that paved the way for him to do what he loves!
His artistic talent and passion for music were nurtured and developed by listening to multiple genres while growing up. The music that he creates and the sounds that he highlights are reflective of his cultural and musical exposure. His biggest influences ranged from Eddie Van Halen, Nile Rodges, Prince, Jimi Hendrix, Jimmy Page, and Eric Johnson for guitar to Michael Jackson, Chris Brown, Tupac, Biggie, Kendrick Lamar, Drake, and Future for musicality, performing, lyrical greatness and singing!. You can see why his fans call him “Versatile AL”! AL99 will always take you on a musical and lyrical journey!
Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Life is never a smooth road, even under the best of circumstances. Struggling to find myself in an environment where I didn’t fit in with anyone but fit in with everyone was difficult for me.
I’ve dealt with multiple injuries from being an athlete, including being paralyzed when I was 13 for 8 weeks. Even in my music journey, I struggled early on trying to find my sound until I realized that my sound is “the AL99” sound because I don’t sound like anyone.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am an ARTIST | MUSICIAN | WRITER | PRODUCER | ENGINEER. I specifically specialize in writing, composing, engineering, and performing my music, which varies in genre and includes live instruments as I’ve been playing the guitar since I was 6 and am now 24. I also play the drums, bass, and keyboard, and produce all of my music in Logic Pro X which is a great skill to have in itself. I’m known for being a very versatile artist.
My fans call me “Versatile AL” and my peers call me the GENIUS, hence my Producer tag, “Big AL, You a GENIUS for this one!” I am most proud of owning my production company/label, owning all of my music, and owning my name. Before anything, I’m a businessman. What sets me apart from others is the fact that I am an artist who does many genres of music; I play four instruments, and I am self-produced and engineered.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
To believe in myself even if no one else does, and from that, people will see the love, passion, and dedication I have for my craft and naturally will want to join in on the ride.
