Meet Tawanda Thomas of The Bex Group

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tawanda Thomas.

Hi Tawanda, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I knew that I loved and would be in some form of real estate or fashion or both from a young age. I used to build buildings with lincoln logs and legos in elementary school. I would then make clothes for my paper dolls and they would run a business out of the lego buildings and live in the lincoln log houses. Fun times…

When I got to high school, I attended Baltimore Polytechnic Institute. It was a dream come true to be able to actually use equipment to build things. Woodshop and the sheet metal classes were my favorite. Those classes made me think that I really could work in construction as a woman. Although my dreams were squashed there, I went on to seek other another way to get into real estate. My mother told me I always have a rebuttal or a defense for an argument, so I turned to law.

I received my Associate’s Degree in Paralegal Studies with a concentration in Corporate Law from BCCC, all the while being a new mother and wife. From there, my husband encouraged me to continue my education because I wanted to become a real estate attorney. I was then able to receive my Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Baltimore and after taking the LSAT once and thinking, not with three children, I obtained my Master’s Degree in Real Estate Development from Johns Hopkins University.

I was fortunate to have a supportive husband while working to complete those degrees. I was also able to learn a lot by working in different facets of real estate (law, lending and sales). All of my experience and education and my husband’s experience and education gave us the foundation we needed to move into the next chapter of our lives and start The Thomas Group of PA in Pennsylvania where we lived. About seven years later, we started The Bex Group, a real estate sales team that is now located in PA, MD, DC, NC and GA.

We are blessed to be able to mentor and coach new to business agents as well as some veteran agents. Our purpose, we believe, is to pay it forward because we had people help us in our various careers and in real estate, so we should do the same. We also believe we are to be change agents for the communities and residents of the communities where we live, work and play.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but I believe that everything happens for a reason. I also believe that sometimes you go through things not for you, but for people you may come in contact with who you are charged to help.

The struggles in growing a business happens with mindset, money, support and faith. I had to learn that being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. Being used to a paycheck on a bi-weekly basis to not getting paid for over 3+ months because there were no settled deals, was rough. With both my husband and I being commissioned based and raising a family of three, we needed to be aggressive with our sales and that wasn’t either of us. We never wanted to make people feel like a commission check and that we didn’t have their best interest at heart, so we all went without for a while. We both would get part-time jobs from time to time, but we were determined to make this work because it allowed us time to be there for our children for their after school events.

The Bex Group is a real estate sales company started by Tony and Tawanda Thomas, a husband and wife. We operate the business in PA, MD, DC, NC and GA. We specialize in residential real estate sales. With Tawanda having a degree in real estate development and having been a commercial real estate underwriter and lender for First Mariner Bank and the later at Fulton Bank f/k/a The Columbia Bank in Columbia, MD, we are able to assist commercial clients.

We believe one of the main things that sets us apart is our authenticity. We are not afraid to be honest and upfront with our clients. We don’t push people to make decisions that are not right for them. We believe that in doing so, we are able to build strong relationships that last. There is a thing in real estate that is called “client for life”. We don’t have clients for life. They either become very good friends or family.

What I am most proud of brand wise is that our name is getting around town on a word of mouth basis. Even though that is the case, what I would like your readers to know about our brand is that we are all authentic. We run our business/team like a record label. We know that there is no one size fit all for a Realtor and because of that, we embrace the difference in style, opinion and purpose each of the agents who join us bring to the table. All we require is that they are ethical and have a heart to be of service to each other and the clients we serve.

If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
People would describe me as being an introvert until I got to know you, then I was very talkative.  I was very much a tomboy until I got older. They would say I loved learning and being prepared. I was somewhat of a perfectionist. They would also say I was very protective of my family and friends and came to their aid whenever necessary. I believe that to be true because I am still like that today.
