Meet Tanika Nelson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanika Nelson.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I am the owner of Nika’s Cupcake Bar. I’ve always loved decorating cakes since I was a little girl. My mom would encourage my creativity by gifting me specialty baking pans and allowing me to experiment in the kitchen. As I got older I realized that baking was more than a thing to do for me. It was therapy. I could sit and calm my mind while watching YouTube. I would recreate what I saw and I felt better even though life and womanhood were very trying at the time.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. I started baking as a business in 2015. I was working in a high-stress / high demand job, I had personal issues going on and was just trying to get on my feet. I had no idea what I was doing as far as business went. I just wanted to throw sprinkles around and be happy and making people happy. So navigating my way through the cottage food world took a little research. Learning about what I can bake and sell from my home and what I couldn’t.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a cupcake and cake topper artist. I specialize in gourmet cupcakes. I know for having equally delicious and aesthetically pleasing treats. My customer service is an intimate experience I treat everyone well because that’s the point. Cake saved me so I care for people in an edible way.

What matters most to you? Why?
What matters to me the most is that people know I care about what I serve. Yes, I sell cupcakes and toppers but the sale is the last of the process. If you follow me on Instagram and you want to talk about cake or whatever, honestly I want to give those light vibes out. I want you to be comfortable enough to share your feelings so that I can grow and get it right. We get so caught up in business and money as a society that sometimes humanity gets tossed to the side. I don’t want to forget that.
