Meet Shiniya Washington of Naturally Loc’d

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shiniya Washington.

Hi Shiniya, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
Whew! Everyone has their fetish; mine is HAIR (I’m only talking about the hair on your head ONLY). It all started out learning how to braid from my cousin when I was 7. I can remember the first person that let me braid their hair. Lol, it was so funny because that’s was when I would literally run out of hair when doing cornrows. But over time, my mom and other family members would buy me mannequins to practice on. I loved my mannequins, styled them like they were legit people. My freestyle used to amaze me.

As life continued, I slacked from doing hair and practicing my craft. So I got into basketball, dance, and step up until I graduated roughly around 2014, I gained interest in locs. Most of my experience came from using my friends as mannequins, for which I am so grateful! Now I offer Retwists, styles, detox. Also, offer but still perfecting; loc repairs, instant loc-ing, and loc extensions. In the future, I want to own a place where is strictly dedicated to the love of locs. WATCH OUT you’ll be seeing more of Naturally Loc’d Soon!

My advice to anyone is never too good to learn from ANYONE regardless of age!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
SMOOOOTH?! Was that a trick question? I struggled with knowing how to place my clips so that my client won’t have a head full, how to keep my two strands tight, every time I would do them, they would unravel. Knowing what products to use and what not to use.

Also, accept that in order for me to get where I want, I can’t be afraid to fail. Without trial and error, how can I know?

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Naturally Loc’d?
Naturally Loc’d is a growing hair business coming into the hair industry to help people feel good about themselves, their natural selves at that. We believe that the natural hair/loc journey runs so much deeper than what’s on the surface. I say that because it forces you to love yourself completely, flaws and all, and also to have patience with yourself and also your beautiful crown on your head.

YES! you’re going to get frustrated, YES! there will be days where you are going to want to cut all your hair off or take down your locs because they are not sitting the way you would want or they are not achieving the style you desire. If you stick with it, I promise the results are going to be amazing and it’s like falling in love with yourself all over again. I specialize in loc maintenance, instant loc, styling, hair care. I am working on specializing in faux locs, loc extensions, corn roll designing, loc detox, braid styling, barbering).

My goal is to be specialized in all of these things within the next three years. What sets me apart from others I believe is that I am not in the industry for money, I just want people to look and feel good, and when someone asks them how are they looking and feeling so good, they simply reply because I just got my hair done from Nia!

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I really don’t believe in good luck… bad luck but I do believe everything happens for a reason even when you feel like there isn’t one. It’s funny because sometimes you won’t really know why certain things happened until months, maybe more later.

I believe in manifesting the things you want and putting in the necessary work to achieve the things we are claiming. The obstacles you go through only strengthen you.
