Meet Shawn Clarke

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shawn Clarke.

Hi Shawn, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I am a wife and mother who love fashion and design.

I wore head coverings more once I started my natural hair journey. This particular morning, I was taking my son to school and rushing out the door to prevent him from being late, I had on my sleep bonnet.

Once arriving at the school, he indicated he needed money to purchase a schoolbook. As I proceeded to come inside, he stopped me with his eyes and with as much respect said, “mommy the bonnet”.

Needless to say, I did not enter the school that day but what that moment showed me, I needed a solution. I knew there had to be a way to look fabulous, chic, and trendy quickly fast, and in a hurry.

Thus, my pre-tied satin-lined headwrap was created. I handmade each headwrap/turban with no sewing experience, I posted my prototypes on social media and women responded positively. That was the beginning of Constant Covering LLC in 2015 from a personal need to a business for women-moms on the go.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Well, in the beginning, I struggled with meeting the demand, which led to weeks of delayed shipments. I was the entire business so unfortunately if I focused on one aspect of the business, I dropped the ball in other areas.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As I shared earlier, I love fashion and within that time I began my natural hair journey, which introduced me to headwraps, scarfs, and coverings.

I am the owner and creator of Constant Covering. I create fashionable and convenient headwear that is lined in satin to protect your hair. I am known for creating pre-tied headwraps in 2015.

I am most proud of the fact that I am a self-taught seamstress. Where we/Constant Covering differs is we specialize in quality satin for protection with the ease of simplistic on-the-go products.

Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
Interestingly enough, I was given an opportunity to be in a vendor-to-consumer online partnership with Macy’s. It was an enormous ask, simply because I only have 2 other seamstresses working with me.

I initially prepared a “thank you but I cannot meet the ask” email. However, after much prayer and I do mean much prayer, I said yes I would love to be in partnership.

I knew the risk but months later we still have a partnership and I did it with the highest level of uncertainty it’s one of the best decisions I could have made for myself and my business.
