Meet Sabrina Wright-Bey of Tangls and Locs Natural Hair Boutique

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sabrina Wright-Bey.

Hi Sabrina, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started in June 2015; I was fired from my security job at a mental institution. I had three children, a mortgage, car payment, lights, water, and other bills. I applied for unemployment and constantly contemplated what to do next. At the time, I was 36 yrs old. I didn’t want to apply for another job, so I prayed for guidance. one particular day, I was at my friend’s house watching television and talking. My spirit spoke to me and told me to call this local popular natural hair salon and ask if they were hiring. I followed my intuition, and the owner said yes, come in tomorrow for an interview. I went, went, and was hired that day. I learned a new skill, natural hair, and then it was up from there. I worked there for 2 years; my spirit spoke again, telling me to step out into my path. I followed that inspiration by renting a booth from a past mentor who gave me a chance to better my craft after hair school in 2000.

I rented a booth from her for one year, and then I received another nudge from renting a suite four minutes away from my house. I stayed there for one year, and then a situation presented itself for me to move again, only this time I found a lovely, quaint townhouse suite in Pikesville, Md; this has been the home of Tangls and Locs Natural boutique for the last three years. I built my brand from the ground up. I worked Monday through Sunday, always available, professional, and pleasant to my clients. I also utilized Groupon, discounts, and other creative ways to build my business. My specialty is natural hair and scalp care focusing on the health of the locs. I also have the privilege to work alongside my mom. She is my shampoo tech.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been fairly smooth?
Some of the struggles I faced along the way are having confidence in myself first and in my work. Worked long hours, in the beginning, had faith that clients would come, kept their appointment, and was satisfied with my performance. I started focusing on perfecting my craft and not on money, but on putting myself in the position to give great results, which will attract clients, then the money will follow.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Tangls and Locs Natural Hair Boutique?

My salon consists of myself, “Bre,” my trainee Mary, and my mom Barbara, who is my shampoo tech. My salon’s healthy hair and scalp start at the shampoo bowl with the chosen products and services in the shampoo room. What sets my salon apart, which has come from the mouthes of new and old clients, is good conversation, networking, quality work, fast service, cleanliness, professionalism, and the comfort of being able to be yourself, unwind, and feel like you are at home. At Tangls and Locs, we genuinely care for your hair and wellbeing. I am also a Certified Juice Therapist through the CMA(complimentary medical association).
