Today we’d like to introduce you to Nazy and Massih
Hi Nazy and Massih, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My brother and I started training in the martial arts at age 10. We both went on to pursue other interests as we got older. He continued his training and teaching in the area and I went on to earn my MSW from University of Maryland, Baltimore and Master of Arts in teaching from Johns Hopkins. After years of teaching in Montgomery county, we decided to combine both of our talents and open our own studio in 2005. Next year, we will be celebrating our 20th anniversary in Howard County.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Like any new business we had many challenges at the beginning. We started with one student and very slowly built up to hundreds. The biggest challenge we’ve had was the pandemic in 2019. With the Covid shutdown, we really had to pivot and face some big challenges. We began teaching classes outside and used zoom for video classes as well. Like we tell our students, tough times go away but tough people don’t.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Nabaiee’s Family Martial Arts?
At our martial arts school, we are teaching much more than just kicking and punching. We are training our students to be their very best selves and to reach their highest potential. We practice a mixed self-defense curriculum incorporate healthy, living habits, and teach character development. These life skills are what separates our students from other martial arts schools. We begin training as early as age 3 1/2 and have kickboxing students that are almost 80.
Is there anyone you’d like to thank or give credit to?
We have incredible families that have been loyal and supportive throughout our journey. We are also indebted to great martial art mentors like Dave Kovar’s, Rener Gracie, Tom Callos and Melody Johnson. We’ve stood on the shoulders of these giants who have generously shared their ideas, curriculum and systems. None of our success would be possible without our amazing staff that train and then pass that learning on to the next generation of martial artists.
