Meet Nahum and Shantha Potler of Pen Lucy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nahum and Shantha Potler.

Hi Nahum and Shantha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Like every fairy-tale, Joonmoon was birthed from a love story. My husband, Nahum, and I forged and built the venue for our wedding in an old overgrown backyard in Berlin, Maryland. From the beginning, we were dreamers. Oh, how beautiful it was to see our dreams weave into reality…we found our calling!

Born n’ raised in Baltimore, Nahum studied set design at Baltimore School for the Arts. His foundation with BSA allowed him to build his confidence with installations, attention to detail, and design. Nahum grew up on the mission field where hope and art were the rhythms of life. I, Shantha, am from all over the place and love that I now call Baltimore my home. Born into the well-seasoned blend of an Indian and Hispanic family, food was the center of every celebration. I have spent the last five years in the Food and Beverage Industry in Baltimore; with incredible mentorship, hospitality has become my second nature and people, my passion!

The name, “Joonmoon,” is a play on the “Strawberry Moon” that shows its color in the month of June. Strawberries have made their appearance in our relationship since the start. In a way, we feel as though it symbolizes God’s hand in our lives. When both of our strengths are brought to the table, we create something beautiful. Nahum and I loved the hands-on process of our wedding so much so, we decided to start from there! A few of our friends took a chance on us earlier this year by letting us design their wedding and the ball just started rolling! Joonmoon Design launched in March 2021, and by the end of the summer, we will have designed five weddings! I say, “fairy-tale” because that’s how it feels. We come from homes of artists and immigrants, where dreams don’t have to seem so far away. Nahum and I are incredibly honored to be a part of people’s stories.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like any growing pains, Nahum and I are learning so much. This past year we became new parents and started a business. Needless to say, we’re running on coffee and dreams. Nahum works with his family business flipping homes, Monday- Friday, and I stay home with our baby. Family comes first. We try to be intentional and present, especially with our baby. Which means, emails don’t get answered until nap time, and going on weekly date nights is a must. Creating a work-life that allows us to prioritize our family was the heart of this venture. By the time we eat dinner and put the baby down for bed, we’re exhausted. Doing the fun stuff- the creative, design side of our business is fun. But finding that oil to our engine for the not-so-fun stuff is hard to find sometimes. We’re finding a rhythm. It’s taking its time and that’s okay because we only just started this journey.
