Meet Moira Horowitz

Today we’d like to introduce you to Moira Horowitz.

Hi Moira, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
After working at an antique bookstore here in Baltimore for almost 13 years, I started my own shop when that shop decided to become more specialized in higher-end antique books and artist’s books. I really decided to go for it during the pandemic in 2020 when everyone was stuck at home. My mission is to share the beauty and absurdity of old books and prints with people from all walks of life. So many folks have no idea that there is a world of book collecting! I had no idea when I entered into it! I am currently online only but plan to take part in local markets and eventually have a brick-and-mortar shop here in Baltimore!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The hardest part has been building a following during a pandemic! I’ve had to rely on Instagram and Facebook to get the word out. And, of course, reminding people that books are wonderful, not only for what they contain but also as special objects with history!

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I specialize in publisher’s bindings, children’s books, medical books, and books about odd topics, like hypnosis, aliens, and the occult! I also sell many beautiful prints that I find in books that are sadly in disrepair.

Can you talk about how you think about risk?
I wouldn’t say that I’m a huge risk-taker, though I do love to perform in rock operas and plays, which I’m sure many people would consider being a risk. Starting this business was probably the biggest risk I’ve ever taken, but to me, it just felt like the natural next step. I couldn’t imagine not working with books. I may not be making enough money, which is very scary, but I’m working on it!

  • My stock ranges in price from $5 to $500! There is something for everyone!
