Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Ugorji.
Hi Michelle, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always had a passion for entrepreneurship from an early age. At eight years old, I was able to double my allowance by selling candy to the kids in my neighborhood. From then on, I knew I would own a business in my adult life!
My love for decorating was inspired by my mom. As a child, I watched my mom design homes and execute unparalleled imaginations flawlessly. My love for décor, deep passion for design, and appreciation for unique artistic pieces has always been a part of my life. I enjoyed draping curtains as a leisure activity, helping friends and family.
My natural love for fabrics and decorating inspired me to master my craft and learn the intricate details of draping. I shadowed with my aunt on interior design projects to gain hands-on experience and knowledge. As I transitioned in my professional career, I decided to take my passion and love for fabrics to the next level by becoming a Certified Event Designer; bringing the art of creativity, personal touch, and attention to detail to every project. While exploring different textiles of fabrics, I realized I had the ability to create masterpieces with fabrics which led me to launched Posh Drapes in 2018. It has been such an exciting and rewarding venture!
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t. As entrepreneurs, our dreams and ideas are sometimes downplayed by others making it a very lonely road. Even the people closest to us may be a bit hesitant about our vision in the beginning.
As an immigrant and African-American woman, I have to work twice as hard. Similar to other business owners, I experienced some struggles when I started my business. For example, getting people to understand my vision, standing out in an incredibly competitive market, and raising funds to start my business.
Fortunately, I was able to overcome some of these struggles by staying focus, hard work, and the outpouring of support I received from my family, friends, and business mentors.
