Meet Marcus and Meagan Smith of A Step Ahead Fitness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Marcus and Meagan Smith.

Alright, thank you for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us how you got started?
A Step Ahead Fitness was started in the winter of 2019 as an idea to introduce children to the fundamentals of sports and fitness without the hassle of parents having to add more to their busy schedules. To accomplish this, we thought it would be ideal to provide mobile sports and fitness classes to local daycare centers, schools, and churches. The plan was fully developed and just as we were ready to begin marketing our services to potential partners, the pandemic came and shut the entire country down. Unfortunately, due to the pandemic, we had to take a backseat and re-evaluate what we were dealing with as a nation. We also had to consider how this would positively and negatively affect us as a company. There were a lot of businesses that were closing and times were becoming scarier by the day. We were all dealing with a virus that no one knew about nor how long it would impact us. Finally, as restrictions began to lift and life began to return to somewhat of a normal state, we decided to reimagine A Step Ahead Fitness in the lives of children across Maryland. As we evaluated the goals of A Step Ahead Fitness and what we wanted to achieve, there was no better time to continue what we started.  We started with virtual classes and slowly began to incorporate in-person classes. Today, A Step Ahead Fitness is a program that schools, centers and parents want to incorporate into the weekly routine of their children. Children’s health and wellness is a big concern in the US today. With our services, we are helping to combat this concern by partnering with caregivers to make health, fitness, and healthy living fun and exciting for our youth.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Just as we were about to launch A Step Ahead Fitness, the pandemic came and took us all by storm; This caused us to not only have to delay our launch date but make significant changes to the strategy and plans we worked tirelessly on. We ended up having to wait two years before we were able to operate. So for those two years, we sat and waited in limbo until the world was safe enough to return to a normal state.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about A Step Ahead Fitness?
A Step Ahead Fitness is our Name. Youth sports and fitness is our game. ASAF provides mobile sports and fitness programs to local schools, childcare centers, and churches. Our mission is to provide a safe and positive environment that inspires, encourages and empowers the youth through sports and fitness. We offer a range of classes from floor hockey, aerobics, yoga, basketball, flag football, and more. The goal is to not only introduce children to the fundamentals of organized sports, but also to use sports and fitness as a tool to build the social, emotional, physical, and independent needs and skills that supports a healthy lifestyle.

Is something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Social media terrifies me. I feel like such a novice when it comes to understanding how to navigate and use social media to promote A Step Ahead Fitness. As powerful as social media can be, I know that I can do so much more if only I knew how to. Maybe I should hire someone to help me out in that department.
