Meet Kirsis Fradin of Soft Serve Succulents

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kirsis Fradin.

Hi Kirsis, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstories.
In 2018, I purchased my very first plant. I never knew I could have a green thumb until I took the leap and bought one on a whim. That plant was my introduction to the world of succulents. Caring for succulents was a great way for me to take my mind off of any challenges I was dealing with. They were therapeutic, and for the first time in my life, I found a connection with nature by being able to take a sick plant and nurture it back to health. I found succulents to be resilient because you could take a plant that suffered from disease, sun damage, or even physical damage and take pieces, such as the leaves, and grows an entirely new plant. I was so fascinated by them and wanted to learn more. They’re so forgiving and have such a strong will to survive.

I was also drawn to them because of their incredible colors. They come in wide varieties and always reminded me of candy and ice cream. While collecting them, I grew frustrated with the quality of plants I’d find. I’d get them home and soon realized they were unhealthy and there was no saving.

One summer day in 2019, I stood by my kitchen window sill and took notice of my little terracotta pots, each one slightly bigger than the next. My insistent sweet tooth thought of ice cream waffle cones. At that moment, I thought of buying an ice cream truck and selling succulent arrangements that would be so vibrant and appealing that they would be mouth-watering, like an ice cream sundae. Since launching Soft Serve Succulents in early 2022, my focus has been on selling arrangements made with healthy plants, and superior quality soil, all in high-end pottery with drainage holes which are all important for maintaining healthy succulents.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
We were all set to launch our business towards the end of March 2020 when the pandemic hit. The last two years presented us with many obstacles, but we didn’t give up and officially launched in early 2022.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Soft Serve Succulents?
We offer beautiful arrangements that have an ice cream theme. Our arrangements come in two classic styles and feature beautiful, vibrant succulents and “toppings,” all designed to conjure up your favorite flavor of ice cream. We operate the World’s First Mobile Succulent Truck, The Truckulent. We give our customers everything they need for their succulents to thrive with minimal work: healthy plants, containers with drainage holes, fast-draining soil that prevents root rot, decorative “toppings,” and cares instructions. While these might sound like small details, they make all the difference between having a plant that will thrive and one that will struggle and may eventually die. We’re also a minority-woman, service-disabled veteran-owned business.

Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
My dad was in the Army, and he was stationed in Germany. One year we got to take a family vacation through Italy and Spain. We got to see many historic sites and make great memories together that are still with me today.
