Meet Kelsie Kirton of KK Visuals

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kelsie Kirton.

Hi Kelsie, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Hello! My name is Kelsie Kirton, and I am the proud owner of KK Visuals. KK Visuals is a photography business that I started in February of 2021. I started my journey with photography around the start of the pandemic when one of my cousins asked me to take some pictures of him on a camera he owned, and I instantly fell in love with photography. Soon after, they gave me a camera to me, and with the support of my friends and family, I felt confident enough to start up my business. However, there is always room to grow, whether personal or business-related, so I am always reaching out to the photographers for pointers, extra help, and classes so that I can continue to grow as a photographer.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No rain, no flowers. Every journey you take in life will for sure have its challenges. The hardest part for me was having enough confidence in myself to start my business. In the beginning, I was practically putting in more than I was getting out because I was honestly scared to start my business. When I first fell in love with photography, I never imagined turning what I looked at as a hobby into a business. However, with the help and support of my friends and a friend whose studio I had been using for some time, I could continue growing as a photographer and do what I needed to do to expand as a business owner..

As you know, we’re big fans of KK Visuals. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about the brand?
KK Visuals has been officially up and running since February of 2021! I specialize in portrait photography. I currently do studio-based shoots, location-based shoots, and events! My favorite thing about my business is that a black woman owns it! I believe there’s a small group of women in photography compared to the men in photography, at least here in Baltimore. While the numbers are rising, it is great to be a part of that number already. Brand-wise, I am most proud of the growth that has been made in just a little over a year and the recognition I have received. I am always just a jump, skip, and hop away from the readers! I’d love to take on new projects, capture pictures for a birthday, or organize a business shoot to help you execute your vision. KK Visuals is always here to help!

We’re always looking for the lessons that can be learned in any situation, including tragic ones like the Covid-19 crisis. Are there any lessons you’ve learned that you can share?
The biggest lesson I’ve learned from the Covid-19 Crisis would be that it is okay to fall, whether it is business-related, personal, or academic. There have been times during the pandemic when it felt like it would’ve been impossible to get myself back off the ground, but as mentioned before, “no rain, no flowers.” Embrace all the moments, good and bad.
