Meet Keith Pinder of Landon Capital

Today we’d like to introduce you to Keith Pinder.

Keith, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up in South Baltimore (Westport). I was raised by my grandparents because my mother was on drugs. At 14 years old I went into foster care due to my grandmother became terminally ill. None of my family wanted me at that time. The department of social services sent me through 32 group homes and shelters during a three-year span. I didn’t finish high school because I was so behind due to being shipped all over Baltimore to different group homes and shelters. At 18, I worked odd jobs and I didn’t feel like it was enough.

So, I went to register for my GED. I then studied for the test and eventually passed. After getting the results of the test I then registered for College at Morgan State. Upon arrival, I asked the counselor for the quickest and most practical degree. She suggested a Business Admin. major. So, I took that major and finished in 3 years. Luckily, I found a Craiglist Ad for stock market sales. I applied and got the job. at a hedge fund called Acorn Management Partners. I later became the first and only Black VP of Operations at the firm. 3 years later, I started my own firm Landon Capital.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was never a smooth road. Every day presents new challenges. In order to be the best you, you have to expect a challenge is going to come. I read a quote in a book that said, “life is 90% of what you make it and 10% of what happens to you.” That quote stuck with me my whole life. It really has been one of the keys to my success.
