Today we’d like to introduce you to Jonathan Joseph Jr.
Hi Jonathan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After working as a General Manager for over 13 years in the DC area. I began to realize that I had essentially been running my own business without the benefits of keeping the net profits. I then set out on a mission to open my own restaurant/bar. My close friend Machod and I wanted to open a place in DC. The cost was too much for our budget, so we began to look elsewhere in Maryland.
Baltimore just seemed like the right area for our concept, it reminded me of the neighborhood I grew up in Boston. Everyone was very welcoming on my first visit and full of love for the city of Baltimore. I knew then that if we needed to be apart of this community. We found a location and opened within six months’ time. The first three months were good and we seemed to be headed in the right direction. We didn’t anticipate the drop off for the summer, we got caught off guard and went into a deep financial hole quickly. This is when you see what you are made of as an owner. When all the pats on the back are gone and bill collectors are ringing your phone and electricity and cable are being cut off. How much do you really believe in yourself and the concept?! I stayed the course and robbed Peter to pay Paul. I never lost sight of the goal and I realized that I was the only one who could turn things around.
I began to analyze our different marketing strategies and Product quality. Kind of like Chic-fil-a did in the early 2000s and came up with a new plan within a plan. It was beginning to work we were getting busier by the week then, March 2020 hit and Covid had other ideas. I really thought that was it, I looked into how I was going to pay back the funds I owed to investors. I was planning to go back to work as a GM to pay of the debt and try again. I began to work at UPS in the warehouse, loading trucks for a few weeks. Then the funniest thing happened July of 2020. We went viral on Instagram and Twitter somehow, our Honey Jerk Wings were front and center. We haven’t looked back since!!! There is way more details about the struggle and the triumph. I really want to leave you with this instead. It doesn’t matter what you do or says if you don’t believe it yourself. Watch what you say negatively about finances or any situation for that matter. Because the most important person is listening to you!! Remain positive and imagine daily you are who you strive to be and it will be so.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not a smooth road by a long shot. Plenty of struggles in different areas of the business. But in the end if you stay the course you will find a way to right the ship.
