Today we’d like to introduce you to Gene Budowski.
Hi Gene, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started tattooing in 2014 in Crofton, MD which is also where I did my apprenticeship. Afterwards, I worked at a very busy street shop in land over, which pushed me to do various styles that I never had interests in, and now I’m so grateful that I was forced to do them because I learned from it and I use tricks from each one in my own work/style now. I started traveling a fair amount to parts of Florida, Philly, and Las Vegas where I was working next to some really good tattoo artists that helped me fine tune my craft to what it is today. John (business partner) and my self opened True Tattoo in 2020 during the pandemic. Which was tough but we endured and made it work. I always strive to keep learning and stay current with the world of tattooing today while also honoring/ remembering the history of tattooing. I specialize in Neo (modern) traditional color and black grey, and large scale Japanese.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Tattooing can be pretty intimidating, so when I first started out, I tried to keep my mouth shut and my eyes and ears open. Especially because I wasn’t always the strongest drawer. So there were plenty of times when I doubted myself or thought I wasn’t cut out for the craft. But I pushed through and made good habits that I still practice today. I’m a firm believer in anyone can do anything if they put their heart into and dedicate themselves to learning/ educating themselves about whatever craft it may be, then putting in the work and applying it.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I specialize in neo (modern) traditional color and black & grey. Also, large scale Japanese.
