Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Akers.
Hi Emily, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I began my journey in the beauty industry while I was still in high school, starting as a shampoo tech 18 years ago. My interest in the industry as a career actually started even earlier, when I began getting my own hair colored and became fascinated by how creative the industry is. Not just artistically, but in the way stylists transform confidence and self-expression (even within themselves). Being in a salon environment so young gave me a front-row seat to the craft, the business, and the relationships that make this work so meaningful.
I continued to let my passion grow by graduating from The Temple: A Paul Mitchell Partner School in early 2012, and later expanded my skill set by becoming a certified makeup artist through The Academy of Makeup in 2017. Beyond schooling, I’ve spent over 17 years working in salons, learning from mentors and peers, refining my technique, and evolving alongside the industry and within the community.
Everything eventually led me to opening my own business, Emphasized Beauty, in a private salon studio in 2021 during the pandemic. Becoming a mom also played a major role in that decision, especially as a single mom, I wanted the flexibility to be present for my child, stay connected to my community, and still do what I love. Opening my own studio gave me the ability to create a more personalized, one-on-one experience for my clients while fully stepping into my role as both a stylist and a business owner, all while building a career that supports my family and allows me to be the best mom I can be.
I’m a licensed cosmetologist in Columbia, Maryland, specializing in custom color, glitterlites (hair tinsel), hair cutting and hair additives. In addition to the studio, I stay active in the community by offering glitterlites (hair tinsel) pop-ups at local businesses, festivals, and private events. I’m deeply passionate about giving my clients the highest level of care, consistency, and expertise, because that’s what they deserve. To be cared for, to feel seen, to feel heard, to feel comfortable and to feel more confident. Looking back, every stage of my journey within the past 18 years has shaped the business and approach I’m proud of today. I strive to continue to grow in each and every way, everyday.
“We’re all beautiful, I’m just here to emphasize what we already have.”
– Emily Akers, Emphasized Beauty
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I’ve faced situations throughout my career that has forced me to start over, set stronger boundaries, and learn how to truly advocate for myself. At times, that was frustrating and exhausting, but it’s also taught me resilience and confidence.
The pandemic was a major turning point for me. It challenged me in ways I never expected and pushed me to reevaluate what I wanted both personally and professionally. While it came with a lot of uncertainty, stress/worry and honestly, some doubt, it also gave me the opportunity to rebuild with intention and create something that felt more aligned with who I am and how I want to show up for my clients, community and my family.
Looking back, any and all challenges have helped shape the business owner (and person as a whole) that I am today. They taught me how to trust myself, stay open, and keep moving forward. So while the road may be bumpy at times, I wouldn’t dream of getting off of it.
As you know, we’re big fans of Emphasized Beauty. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
Emphasized Beauty’s a small business, an independent salon studio, but it’s mighty in intention, quality, and care. Right now, it’s just me and I work one-on-one with each client, which allows me to truly customize every service and create an experience that feels personal, relaxed, and thoughtful. My focus is on connection, consistency, fun and long-term results.
I specialize in custom color, precision hair cutting, hair additives, and glitterlites (hair tinsel). I’m known for creating wearable looks that enhance what’s already there while prioritizing hair health and integrity. Whether someone is looking for a subtle refresh or a meaningful transformation, my goal is always to make them feel confident, comfortable, and truly seen. I’ve also been doing makeup since 2017 and while I’m currently taking a break from wedding contracts, I hope to get back to it shortly.
What sets my business apart is the experience. Clients aren’t rushed, double-booked, or treated like a number. My studio is a safe, welcoming space where people can relax, be heard, and trust that they’re in good hands. I also stay active in the community with my glitterlites (hair tinsel) pop-ups at local businesses, festivals, and private events, as well as attend networking events, which allows me to connect with people beyond my studio walls. Especially with other local businesses.
I want readers to know that while my business may be “small”, it’s built with heart, experience, purpose and SO much care. At the end of the day, my work is about more than hair. It’s about helping people feel like the best version of themselves when they walk out the door. I’m always looking for ways to make Emphasized Beauty better each and every day, whether that’s through continued education, elevating the client experience, building connections, or simply growing and refining the business as a whole.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
Oh yes. I’d say the biggest risk that I’ve taken was going out on my own and starting my business. It was during the pandemic and while I had to start almost completely over from scratch. So while it was extremely risky and scary, it was one of the best decisions that I’ve ever made.
Having my own salon was actually something I dreamed about when I first fell in love with the beauty industry, so being able to do that now, even on a “small” scale, is incredibly meaningful to me.
