Today we’d like to introduce you to Devyn Samios-Uy.
Devyn, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
The passing of my mother in 2018, who was always proud of me no matter what I did, pushed me to venture out on my own and open my own business in 2019.
I wanted to continue to make her proud of me.
After working for others for years, earning the bare minimum, and working myself to the bone, I sought out my mentor Cheryl Hicks, who taught me Reiki, and asked if I could join her Center as an independent massage therapist, Reiki healer, and crystal healer.
I was terrified. I didn’t have any experience owning my own business let alone how to run it. Could I make it? Would I fall flat on my face? I let go of all of my worries and jumped head-in. I knew I would make it work no matter what.
For the first year, I offered my services through Groupon, which really got my name out there in the community. I put my heart and soul into my work with every client. And they can definitely tell. I built my book quickly and was able to sustain myself without the discount program.
I continued my university studies in psychology and began working on other certifications such as Life Coach and Reiki Master. I wanted my practice to be a healing space for the body, mind, and spirit– a whole-person approach to wellness.
I have been undergoing my studies in Shamanic Chinese Medicine and after my undergrad is completed, I will continue my education in acupuncture and Chinese Herbalism.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
The road has not been a smooth walk, to say the least. As a teenager, I was bullied ruthlessly for being overweight and gay. It was so bad that I dreaded going to school, often asking my mother if I could stay home. I had little to no friends and no confidence in myself.
Soon after, I ended up dropping out of high school. I became a hermit and hid away from the world in my room. My only social interaction was through online chat rooms and video games. It wasn’t until I turned 18 that I gained the drive to venture out on my own and decided to spend a year in Buffalo, New York.
It was an interesting learning experience, to say the least, but it broke me out of my shell. But I found myself wanting to educate myself, I always enjoyed learning and expanding my horizons. Now older, and more aware of myself, I returned home with the determination to enter college and earn my degree.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I am an independent massage therapist of 6+ years.
I have had training in a variety of modalities such as deep tissue, Swedish, trigger point therapy, reflexology, acupressure, and so much more! I am also a Reiki Master, which is an energy-based healing technique that can help you feel more aligned with yourself and the universe.
Recently, I received certification as a Life Coach. People tend to say, I offer a calming demeanor that allows them to just open up and tell me their stresses and problems. I really offer healing sessions that focus on all aspects of wellness– the physical, mental, and spiritual.
I was born a healer, and if you believe in past lives, I have been in many, many lifetimes. Nothing satisfies me more than when my clients come into my studio feeling completely weary and fatigued, and leave rejuvenated and ready to take on life again.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I read a lot of books about new age spirituality and personal growth. Books on the metaphysical benefits of crystals, astrology, qigong, and wellness are staples in my library.
