Today we’d like to introduce you to Craig Mathies Jr.

Craig, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My interest in photography began when I was attending The University of Maryland Eastern Shore, where I obtained my bachelor’s degree in Computer Science. I worked at Sam’s Club in their photo lab part-time. The process of developing photographs for people and the images that some people captured inspired me to take pictures as well. After college, I would just take pictures using my cellphone and a friend of mine told me I took some great pictures with my phone but I should invest in a camera. I ended up buying a camera and just taking pictures of whatever caught my eye. During a family trip to Atlanta a few years back, I posted pictures that I took while I was there and when I came back home, a couple of my friends liked the photos that I had posted on social media and they were the 1st people to actually book me to do photoshoots for them. The name of my business may seem self-explanatory but it actually incorporates both of my parents, as we all share the same 1st initial and if it wasn’t for them, there would be no me. That’s how the name and the business C.Mathies Photography came into existence. I’m truly thankful and grateful for those who encouraged me to go after my passion. Today I currently shoot part-time in a studio space in Annapolis, MD but I also do photoshoots throughout the country and internationally as well.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road especially during the government shutdown of 2018 where a lot of my clients were impacted and then again during the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic up until the beginning of this year. I am truly grateful that I was able to sustain my business during those times.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I mainly specialize in portrait photography but I have done and do events/weddings as well. I would say I’m proud of having the gift to capture special moments in the lives of people that they can cherish forever.

I would say the thing that sets me apart from others is that I always try to make sure my clients are having fun and living in the moment, it doesn’t matter if it’s their 1st time in front of the camera or if they are a professional model. We are going to have fun, laugh, and create something that you will love. “A picture allows you to capture a moment in time that creates a memory that last forever.”

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
The photography industry is always changing because there’s new technological advances, new trends when it comes to shooting styles, editing styles, clothing styles, hairstyles, & makeup. So, the amount of changes and trends could shift from one season or year to the next. So, it’s imperative that as an artist you try to stay up to date with these things so when your clients come to you, you understand the vision that they wish to create or need you to create.
