Today we’d like to introduce you to Aaliyah Marshall.
Hi Aaliyah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
TheAsmLook is an online fashion boutique that promotes beauty amongst young women of all sizes, shape and colors. The company’s mission is to promote self-confidence and self-development because a lot of women struggle with identity. At the age of 13, I always wanted to have my own store that is unique to me. The original idea of TheAsmLook was first introduced in 2019. At the current moment, I was working a 9-5 full-time job while pursuing my bachelor’s degree and I realized that I wanted to invest into myself and fulfill my life’s purpose. I did not like the idea of being micromanaged, so I decided to manage myself!
During the year of 2019/2020, I did numerous of business pitches that were time-consuming at the University Of Baltimore. I took feedback from professors and incorporated it into my business idea. I took approximately one year and a half to save up and get my ideas together. During that time frame, I handled all the legality that came with operating a business so that by the time I launched, I would be safe. Being the only person in charge of designing, creating and marketing was very much tough and time-consuming. At times I wanted to give up because I had a lot of responsibilities while pursuing my master’s degree. I had to sacrifice spending time with friends and family because I wanted to reach my end goal. I gained the strength to continue to push forward. My end goal was to provide a valuable service to my surrounding community. TheAsmLook was officially launched in March 2021! Every month I take note of what works and what doesn’t work so that each new season launch can be better then before!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being an entrepreneur has its ups and downs. TheAsmLook had bumpy roads along the way. One of the main challenges I faced was time. Time was a struggle for me because some of my products were very much time consuming and many products had to be delayed because I was the only one physically making them. In addition, marketing was another obstacle that my company faced. When you first start out with your business, at times, it can be hard to reach your target audience outside social media and on social media especially if you do not have a big following starting off. The clothing industry is very big and challenging. I had to beat my competitors pricing as much as I can and continue to come up with new ideas for my shop.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am currently attending the University Of Baltimore. I am getting my MBA while specializing in Leadership and management. I graduated with my bachelor’s degree in 2019 and I knew that I wanted to take on much of a leadership role due to my entrepreneurial background. I decided to specialize in leadership and management so that I can learn and adapt the necessary information needed to lead. In addition, for the past few years, I have been working in the financial industry which includes, stocks, mortgages, and being a 401K specialist. Outside of the corporate world, I am passionate about writing. I am in the process of finalizing a couple of poems that I have wrote and submitting them to be published.
In addition, I have a book that I have been working on since 2019 called “The Tears Watered Her Flowers”. I am most proud of my ability to be able to handle multiple things at once whilst still remaining strong and dedicated. In addition, I am certainly proud of my academic background as well. My top accomplishment was being able to launch my business while maintaining a 3.64 Gpa. What sets me apart from others is my skills and ambition. I take pride in pouring my heart and soul academically and creatively into each project I am working on. What also sets me apart is the amount of risks I take when I am deeply passionate about my work.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
My own definition of success is accomplishing a goal you thought would be impossible to accomplish years prior. Success to me is experiencing an outcome that turns out favorable whilst having the ability to fulfill your role in a company, project, task, etc. Most importantly, success is all about the milestones and achievements that have been reached.
