Life & Work with Yanira Colon

Today we’d like to introduce you to Yanira Colon.

Hi Yanira, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I was born and raised in Puerto Rico and moved to Miami, FL to attend college and to study fashion design. After finishing my degree, I worked as a designer for a few years and then moved to New York City to further my education and career. While I worked in the corporate world, I always enjoyed organizing and decorating events as a hobby. This love of entertaining and decorating started during my teen years and allowed me to channel my creativity into turning any gathering into a special event.

In 2010, I had the opportunity to move to Bangalore, India. During that time, I had my first experience as an entrepreneur and created a brand of baby products using beautiful hand block printed textiles from Jaipur.

Upon my return to the US in 2016, I dreamed of having a home-based business that allowed me to express my creativity while spending time with my family and caring for my two young daughters. While looking for the perfect opportunity to arise, I started working as a travel planner, since I also love traveling. After moving to Ellicott City, Maryland in 2019, I decided to turn my passion for art, design, parties, and balloons into a business.

Perfectly Wrapped was founded in 2019 and evolved into a full-service balloon decorating business during the pandemic. When the pandemic started all of the vacations I had booked for clients were canceled in a matter of days. It was the most devastating feeling to see all the time and effort I had put into planning vacations for clients vanishing so quickly and the financial loss of all the commissions. That pushed me to grow Perfectly Wrapped and expand my services.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road. One of the biggest struggles has been not having a local network. When I started the business, I was very new to Ellicott City, and just three months later the pandemic started. It was very hard to promote my services. Now, I’m a member of the Howard County Chamber and visit Howard County and I’ve been able to network with local businesses.

Also, we are currently experiencing a global shortage of balloons. Like many industries, balloon production has been affected by the pandemic. It is taking extra time and effort to secure the inventory needed to satisfy all the balloon orders.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
Today, Perfectly Wrapped offers balloon decorating services for parties and events. We can create balloon arches and balloon centerpieces for corporate events and galas, attention-getting balloons for grand openings, elegant balloon garlands for weddings and bridal showers, trendy organic styled balloons for birthdays, balloon drops for new year’s celebrations, and more. Whatever the occasion we will help you bring your event up to the next level with a room full of Instagram-worthy balloon art.

We are customer-service-driven. I see myself, not only as a balloon artist but as a problem-solver. Many of our clients know they want to decorate an event, but don’t know where to start. My goal is to take over that task from them and deliver a stress-free, memorable, unique celebration decor.

Risk-taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I’m a calculated risk-taker. In 2010, I took probably the biggest risk of my life. I left my corporate job, our family, and friends and moved across the World with my husband and my 1-year-old daughter. I had never been to India before and it was frightening. But I’m so glad I took that risk. That experience changed my life in so many positive ways.

I’m certain now that as a small business owner, you need to take risks. It is only when you push yourself to take risks that growth will happen.
