Life & Work with Tevon Chapman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tevon Chapman.

Tevon, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started doing comedy in 2011 after 2 friends of mine kept asking me to be in a play they wrote, they are also brothers that lived on the same block as I did. One of the brothers Desi Alexander had been doing comedy about 4 yrs already and told me I should try it after we finished the play. I did, my first comedy show was at the water center in Baltimore on March 18th, 2011. In that time I’ve performed all over Baltimore, DC, Virginia, Philly, New York, Detroit and a host of other cities. I’ve opened up for the likes of Melanie Comarcho 2 different times and hosted for John “Pops” Witherspoon. I’ve met a bunch of famous comics and gotten some great advice. I’m still on my Comedy journey til this day having fun making ppl laugh.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It’s never a smooth road, struggles are hecklers, people talking during the shows, drunk people, shows that are just thrown together. It’s hard if you don’t drive and can’t get to certain gigs, the money isn’t there until you really make it or are constantly booked. You have dry spots sometimes and real life doesn’t stop.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
During the day I’m a commercial truck driver. I specialize in a few different things as well, I can fix appliances, gas and electric. Just a handyman if you will. I’m most proud of overcoming tuff obstacles, bouncing back from falling off, I purchased my first house on my own and currently trying to purchase my own equipment to drive for myself. What sets me apart is I know a lot of quitters and I’m not one of them, I refuse to quit.

How do you define success?
Success to me is goals achieved, barriers broken, accomplishments, overcoming adversity, beating the odds you know. Being able to take care of yourself and your family without struggle.
