Life & Work with Shirnice Kelly

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shirnice Kelly.

Hi Shirnice, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey began in high school, where I took Culinary Arts and I found my love for decorating cakes. I then attended Baltimore International College and majored in Baking and Pastry Art. In 2008, I began selling red velvet cake and cupcakes. In 2012, I took my business to social media, birthing Sweet as Zyi.

My candy apple journey began when a coworker asked me to make pink candy apples with zebra stripes. I panicked! I didn’t have a clue on how to make candy apples, more less a pink candy apple. After some research, a couple of candy melts, and sugar sheets, I had conquered my first decorative candy apple. From there, my mind took off with the endless designs I could achieve with an apple. Over time my creative side was pulling me into another direction and my enjoyment for decorating candy apples grew. I followed that feeling and changed my business platform a bit where I would no longer focus on cakes but decorative apples. Saying goodbye to Sweet as Zyi and introducing Apple’D (pronounced Applaud)!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
When I stopped making tier cakes, my business sales took a major hit. People were not really sold on the idea of candy apples being at their party or event.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Apple’D candy apples are not your regular hard candy apples. Here apples are dipped in chocolate and customized for any event or theme. People come to me for over-the-top apples. Yes, I can do basic designs, but that’s not what I am known for. I’m known for transforming apples into art.
