Life & Work with OJ Carrizales

Today we’d like to introduce you to OJ Carrizales.

Hi OJ, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My life I always had a hustlers mentality, growing up I seen my pops hustle. The music he played and the way he dressed really made me want that hustler lifestyle. In 2017, I first started my brand Dapper Money Clothing my junior year of high school. I first started off drawing on clothes with sharpie, then I started doing my research on the fashion industry and different methods I can use. Eventually, I worked my way through all the different methods. Drop Shipping, Heat Transfer Vinyl, Screen Printing, Manufacturing out the country, and more. Going through all this is why I’m where I’m at today. I had ups and downs through each different method but they all taught me to never give up, to constantly elevate, and never get complacent because there’s always more to achieve and obtain.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
If anyone tells you that this business stuff is a smooth road THEY LIED. Being an entrepreneur has tons of ups and downs. But personally, the struggles I’ve faced have been things like taking losses after investing money into something and that didn’t work out. I definitely would doubt myself and my abilities when this type of stuff would happen. Some nights asking myself “Is this worth it?” because outside of this I still have my life. I would say that’s another struggle, trying to balance your business and your personal life, making time for your customers/orders, while also trying to make time for the ones you love. I’ve faced lots of struggles but I’ve never let them hold me back from my goals no matter how hard it gets.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I always stamp myself as a “HUSTLER” but most would consider me an entrepreneur. My first business venture is my own clothing brand, “Dapper Money Clothing” that I created in 2017. After years off work, DMC has been recognized as one of Colorado’s top clothing brands. Stemming from that is a manufacturing business my godbrother and I started called “EmbroDega”. We specialize in custom embroidery and are working towards more machines/methods of manufacturing. I also am going to start my own Dog Kennel, where I will be breeding full breed Cane Corso’s, I’m just waiting for my boy to be off age to breed. But what sets me apart from others is my hunger and desire to be great. I refuse to settle and be average. I’m always looking for ways and opportunities to expand and grow myself and my businesses. No matter how much I get, I’m going to always want more.

Is there any advice you’d like to share with our readers who might just be starting out?
For those just starting out, I would tell them block out all the negative energy and people and lock in. When you first start out people are going to laugh and hate because that’s what they did to me. But I stayed focused and kept grinding until they respected me. Don’t ever give up even when it feels like it ain’t worth it no more, cause if you do then all you have is “what ifs” but if you don’t and you cross that finish line, you’ll look back and be proud and glad you ain’t give up and it will make you look at yourself in a positive light! I wish someone would have told me how to be more financially knowledgeable and smart because I wasn’t and it definitely has held me back from big opportunities. But we all have different struggles, it’s about how you carry it and get through it. Moral of the story is never give up and be smart about the moves you make!
