Life & Work with Nikki Lewis

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nikki Lewis.

Hi Nikki, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I became an online content producer with my kids as my partners back in 2016.

Like many kids, my son Nigel (10 years old at the time) was really into video games and was asking my hubby and me for a new game every other minute. After buying a few I said to him, ‘You know what? You should start your own business and buy your own video games.’

He liked that idea and decided to start a business. Having been an entrepreneur most of my life I figured I’d guide him. His sister, Nadia (6 years old at the time) didn’t want to be left out so she jumped in with us too. The three of us became business partners with my hubby as our cheerleader as he continued to work his own full-time job.

We started with an online merchandise company and in 2017, I thought it would be great to show people the faces behind the business so we started a YouTube channel with our brand name, Loose Seeds. We started creating fun, family-friendly videos. Before you know it we’d fallen in love with creating this kind of content and we put the merchandise business on the back burner to focus exclusively on YouTube.

Since then, we have grown our content business into 7 channels, training for aspiring content creator families, brand deals, licensing deals, and tons of content. The hubby joined us years ago and now has his own focus under our family brand, Loose Seeds.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road hasn’t been smooth.

YouTube frequently makes changes requiring creators to pivot their approach to content. Also, with having kids as your business partners, you have to navigate their changes, temperaments, and growth.

But keeping our family ‘why’ top of mind helps me push through the difficult times. Our mission is to be the go-to family-run creator brand that entertains, educates, and empowers.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
There isn’t enough positive, fun, funny content from creators of color being promoted online.

Our content helps to change that. We create content across many verticals to reach various audiences. Under our Loose Seeds brand you can find the following channels on YouTube as well as other social platforms:

Loose Seeds ~ fun, funny family challenges and vlogs
Loose Seeds SKITS ~ funny skits and parodies to watch as a family
Loose Seeds GAMING ~ Roblox family roleplay videos
Mommy Seed ~ learn to launch a content creator business as a family
Daddy Seed ~ sneakerhead talk from a dad and teen perspective
Nigel Seed ~ Livestream gaming
Nadia Seed ~ Lifestyle, wellness, and DIY

I also have a podcast, the “In the Company of My Kids” podcast, where I discuss growing a content business as a family.

I’m proud that I’ve taught my kids how to act on camera, how to write scripts, how to direct and produce, how to edit videos and promote, etc. I hope my family can truly be an inspiration to other aspiring family creators.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Make a solid plan and stick to it as best you can. A content calendar is super helpful. Remember that you have to stay consistent in this content business. Posting one thing and then nothing else for long spells of time can cause you to lose the attention of your audience.

In this business, you have to stay in front of the audience. Also remember, this is a business where you have access to earning income from various sources. On YouTube, you can earn Adsense money once you qualify but outside of that, you can also earn through brand deals, your own products, digital products, services, etc. There’s so much you can do.
