Life & Work with Nakita Addington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakita Addington.

Hi Nakita, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Sweet Tooth Kupcakery began as a bright idea. One day my husband Marshall and I were having a casual conversation about business ventures we’d be interested in. He asked me what I thought I could do to start a business; honestly, I didn’t know. I’ve never had any special talents that could bring in income. I thought back to a previous meeting at my corporate job when I brought some cupcakes in and fell in love with the cookies and cream cupcakes I selected. It was then when I said to my husband, “maybe I can try to make some cupcakes.” Sweet Tooth Kupcakery was birthed and launched less than a year after that conversation.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to starting this business has not always been smooth. Because I took a leap of faith in launching Sweet Tooth Kupcakery, I began with minimal skill or experience with baking. I relied heavily on my family and friends to try out new things and suggest new things so I wouldn’t get stuck in a box. But the actual baking was the smallest struggle, easily fixed with recipe research and taste tests. I struggled with pricing, marketing, purchasing the correct items that would benefit me long-term, and most importantly, time management! The actual business ownership aspect was something I had to learn over and over again.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
Sweet Tooth Kupcakery is a Baltimore-based bakery offering delicious baked treats that are perfect for all occasions. We cater to each individual and occasion with custom cakes and cupcakes that pinpoint our customer’s vision and make it come alive. At Sweet Tooth Kupcakery, we provide top-notch customer service to ensure each customer feels valued. We are most proud of our forward progress in baking, always willing to step outside the box and grow this business one client at a time. We are different because we believe that love, humility, and empathy go a long way when people trust you with their business.

How do you define success?
Success is simply doing the best you can and being satisfied with knowing you gave everything you had with what was in front of you. As you grow and evolve, your perspective of what success looks like may change, but it doesn’t diminish whether you were successful or not in the early stages of your journey. A kindergartner is just as successful as a college graduate.
