Life & Work with Morgan Dominique (Stokes)

Today we’d like to introduce you to Morgan Dominique (Stokes).

Hi Morgan, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Baltimore, and like many other children growing up in the city, I saw and experienced my fair share of trauma but I always found an outlet through dance. I marched in a marching band, a staple of Baltimore culture back in the 90’s. I went off to college and that’s where the unhealthy habits I had with food really reared their ugly head. I was very much an emotional eater, using food to commemorate almost any occasion, both good and bad.

The stress of putting myself through college with little to no family support, working to support myself and the pressure of collegiate studies definitely sparked more poor choices and subsequently, I gained what they call the “freshman 15” (15 pounds you gain in the first year of your college journey) …me, however, I gained 15 pounds the freshman, sophomore, junior and senior year(s). It was around my senior year that I was finally tired of not looking and feeling my best and had to make a change. I started making little lifestyle adjustments that added up to big results and of course everyone around me wanted to replicate results for themselves. At the time however, I was 3.5 years into a criminal justice degree and definitely not the most qualified to train people on health and fitness. I did have the passion and persistence though, so after the campus wellness center reprimanded me for consulting people without the credentials, I thought to myself “What can I create to help women get fit and have FUN?” and that’s there TwerkFit was born!

I’ve lost all together over 50 pounds and the rest was HERstory! Now over five years later, I’ve dedicated myself to everything health and wellness; and I make getting fit fun! and help ladies (and men) break barriers on the traditional definitions of fitness, feel more confident and create better healthier habits!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
My journey thus far has certainly not been an easy one, from putting myself through college to navigating the uncertain waters of entrepreneurship, I started my business with a few hundred dollars to my name. I have been homeless, heartbroken and belittled in the pursuit of my passion. You always think your friends and family will be the first ones to support you, many learn quickly that it’s often not the case. I have been faced with many obstacles and much opposition. However, my most important lesson has been mindset, I know now that everything starts there. Growing up in Baltimore taught me about persistence and resilience. The younger me believed everything was falling apart at one point, where the older, more mature me understands that everything was coming together and even losses are just lessons. I have learned that life is tough but so am I!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am now a full-time entrepreneur, choreographer and fitness instructor teaching women (and men) all around the world how to make getting healthy and fit, functional and most importantly, FUN, I created TwerkFit Co. in 2015 and lost over 50lbs myself from my tips, tricks and tools. I have since hosted hundreds of classes, birthday and bridal celebrations for women all over the United States. Dozens of women share their stories with me about how my class has helped them become more confident and achieve their fitness goals. I am most proud of how far I have come with my brand and what it represents to me. It’s way deeper than meets the eye, my brand was created to transform lives and give women a judgment-free place to just be!

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Most people may not know I suffered seriously with mental health along my journey. Thats why I am a huge advocate for it now. I use to think working until you have nothing left was the way to be successful. I am learning now that rest and rejuvenating your mind are vital to the process.
