Life & Work with Mikayla Richardson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mikayla Richardson.

Hi Mikayla, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
When I was younger, I always had an interest in arts whether it be cooking, music, drawing painting, dancing, singing. Painting and drawing was something I definitely was always interested in I for the most part taught myself to draw and paint. During COVID, when mostly all businesses were closed I wanted to find another form of revenue and just off the strength of posting one painting, many different individuals began to ask me to paint, draw, do face paintings at events, host sip and paints, painting on clothing, designing grad caps, and hopefully I will be able to add to my expertise and have many more opportunities to showcase my art. I currently am a senior in college taking on social work and art. At one of my jobs “The Boys and Girls Club of Westminster”, I have an art program for teens and adolescence which is just a great way of having the kids showcase their talents, or just be in en environment where they feel comfortable and can be as free with their art as possible. After I graduate I plan to tap more into art, that comes with eventually beginning to tattoo and broadcasting more of my talents so that I eventually can focus mainly on art and that being one of my main sources of revenue. The main population I try to reach are children and teens, just because I know a lot of them need a space to feel free expressing themselves and where I even mentor some of these individuals to where they can be the best they can be and do anything to their full potential.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Nothing that you’re passionate about ever comes easy. There were many times I wanted to quit, whether it be no motivation, a creative blockage, not getting as many clients from when I first started, and business being slow in general. Understanding that there will not always be a steady path but also knowing that this is something I’m passionate about and want to make an impact with the world, I’m prepared for the ugly and pretty. You can’t always expect the best and have to understand you will have those rough days. Staying consistent, coming out of your comfort zone, and just in general taking a risk sometimes can go a long way and definitely benefit you in the long run.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would say that I specialize mainly in painting on different sources of what could be considered “canvases”, whether it’s someone’s face, body, a wall, clothes, etc., art is always displayed through paint. I know a lot of other different art mediums from oil painting, pottery, watercolor, sketching/drawing, and so much more. I’m most proud of the confidence and versatility I’ve gained out of starting my art business. I can be very to myself but when I do art and share those experiences with different individuals, I feel like a completely different person. I can do so many different things that I didn’t even realize I could do, and I should be more appreciative of the talent and what I can create, as well as the ideas I come up with. Anyone can paint, anyone can do art, but I genuinely think the love and passion I have for art is what makes me different. I’m able to wake up and be happy with what I chose to do, and even though I can’t fully do all that I have planned for my art right now mainly because of school, I know that I have so many ideas that should be brought to life to help better myself and those around me and I’m willing to take chances to get to where I need to be when it comes to my art.

How do you think about happiness?
God and my little sister I think are my main sources of happiness. Without God, you have no faith, no peace, no serenity. You can’t become one and whole with yourself without him being the center of your happiness besides yourself. I’m not an individual that I can say I participate in church every week and whatever is considered a “usual” Christian, but I know the relationship that I’ve built and am currently building with him is for my better and to get me to where I need to be. My little sister is my motivation and knowing that she looks up to me and depends on me for many things, she knows how to always bring me back to myself, give me inspiration, take me out of my comfort zone. She is literally like a mini best friend and no we aren’t perfect but sometimes it feels like it just based off the relationship we do have. She pushes me to want to be a better me.
