Life & Work with Lameka Alston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lameka Alston.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I have always loved paper crafting. In 2014, my paper crafting hobby led me to card making.  This included coloring stamped images with Copic markers.  The more I submersed myself into card making, the more I recognized that the stamps did not represent who I was as a black crafter.

I saw a need in the market for images that represented not only myself but all people.  I started with a few sets of stamps and the sales reinforced my decision.  I expanded my business to meet the demands of my customers.

In 2019, I attended a planner conference by Wild For Planners for an opportunity to present my products to Michael’s stores. Hundreds applied, twenty were chosen, and only four of us made it. I was one of the four but only three of us moved forward with contracts.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle-free, but so far would you say the journey has been a fairly smooth road?
It has not always been smooth. Everyone sees the good part but has no idea of the struggle it takes to get there. There were several moments in my business that I wanted to give up. My husband encouraged me to keep going.

I struggled initially with declining sales under my previous business name. I stopped selling stamps and went digital. I was in a crafting slump. I knew I had to make something that would appeal to crafters but I did not know what to do.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
