Life & Work with Jerlicia Hobson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jerlicia Hobson.

Hi Jerlicia, so excited to have you on the platform. So, before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
When I was younger, my aunt was in esthetics. This introduced me to the world of beauty and makeup which I found intriguing. During the time while in school, I often found myself on YouTube, watching and learning about makeup. At that point, I knew I wanted to do more than watch makeup on YouTube. I worked at Sephora for the holiday season then MAC cosmetics for about 2 years and since I was only a freelance artist, my hours were very slim. Let me just be real here, I had bill bills especially when it came to raising my daughter. Although I had a lot of great gigs like working on a tv show, fashion shows, etc., I started a 9-5 job working at a financial consulting firm. That was short-lived because I was truly limiting myself from great opportunities that involved what I was passionate about—makeup. I took the knowledge from working at the financial consulting firm along with the customer service skills from MAC and took a huge leap of faith by quitting my job to become a full-time makeup artist.

Since my huge leap of faith in 2016, I’ve worked on several campaigns for multimillion-dollar companies, traveled all over the world for clients, taught sold-out makeup classes and I continue to inspire men and women with my journey.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Taking that leap and being successful was not a smooth walk in the park, but more like a crawl, a one-leg hop, a jog, and a standstill for several years. Raising my daughter and driving into my purpose took a lot of courage and a strong village behind me. There were several moments where I wanted to leave the entrepreneur life and just work a 9-5 but God had bigger plans for me and would always remind me of one of my favorite scriptures Ephesians 3:20. Your journey is beautiful regardless of what it “looked like” or “took to get there” because it’s YOUR journey, and I promise it will inspire someone.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
What sets me apart from so many others is people cannot believe I’m 100% self-taught with my skill and knowledge level. Having the ability to transform a woman’s life through makeup is the greatest gift God blessed me with. I’m most known for working with everyday women transforming them and enhancing their natural beauty and star list clients. Some I’ve worked with and currently are Kimberly Elise, Sarah Jakes Roberts, Tammy Rivera, Tink, Bmore Brave, KMichelle, Ari (TheRealKyleSister), Black Ink Crew Chicago, Dreezy, Le’Andria Johnson, Miss Ghana Universe, DJ Sophia Body, Mieka Joi, & Monique Rodriguez. I went from working at various retail stores, a corporate America job to being a full-time Professional makeup artist owning Makeup By Jerlicia LLC. Currently, I am touring with a Grammy-nominated artist and I’m also contracted with a Global beauty Agency.

I’m so proud that my daughter gets to bear witness the beautiful side of following what’s in your heart/dreams and trusting God’s plan for your life. Secondly, I am proud of the my evolvement a mentor. I never knew mentorship was a part of my purpose until I felt the joy of sharing my story and helping other women of all ages—no matter where they are in their journey. Last, but not least, I am proud of being self-taught and becoming an accredited professional makeup artist, which has allowed me to exceed my own expectations of true artistry.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
Don’t be afraid to reach out to people, even DM sliding. Even if they are not particularly in YOUR field, you can get great knowledge from those in the entrepreneurial world because most of our journey is similar. Attend free events in your town or travel! I LOVE traveling because you seriously never know who you’ll meet or get connected to. Ask questions and be willing to grow.
