Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Byrne.
Hi Hannah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for photography began at Penn State University. As a college student, I did some traveling around the world, capturing gorgeous scenes and people from all sorts of cultures and loving every minute. This resulted in me pursuing photography as a career and I haven’t looked back since! I’ve been in business for almost seven years! I can’t believe it. I always say that entrepreneurship has high highs and low lows – but it’s totally worth it to watch your vision and dreams become a reality. I know without a doubt that I wouldn’t still be in business without help from others. From mentors to my associates, it takes a village to run a business!
I started shooting weddings on the East Coast and met my now associate photographers, Anna + Natira. I moved to San Francisco, CA in January 2020 but our team continues to serve the Baltimore area!
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Entrepreneurship has high highs and low lows. There are so many aspects of running a business that I’m not good at. Realizing your weaknesses early is so important. For me, that means getting help with my accounting/books and social media marketing.
Another challenge I found was feeling lonely. At a corporate job, you are able to interact with coworkers and be social throughout the day… running a business from home can definitely feel isolating. (Although I think we all felt that in 2020). Making an effort to network and find friends within your industry is so important. You’re going to want to have a solid crew around you for the low lows. I truly don’t know where I’d be without my core group!
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I run a bicoastal wedding photography team serving Baltimore, MD and San Francisco, CA. We are experts at wedding and engagement photography and get to work with some of the coolest couples ever!
Our goal is to “capture the moment so our couples can be in it.” We all have an eye for photography and strive to create gorgeous imagery without keeping our couples from the celebrations on their wedding day.
I’m really proud of the clients we attract. I continue to be so grateful with the couples we get to work with and it makes me feel like we’re really doing something right if we’re attracting all these cool people!
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
I think the biggest risk when starting your own business is the risk of stability. You aren’t getting a paycheck every two weeks, you have to figure out health care and really manage your expenses well. This is NOT my strength, which is why I hire professionals to help me feel as stable as possible.
You are also risking your ego. You’re putting your skill, talent, expertise on the table and hoping that people will pay you for it. It’s a really scary thing!
At the end of the day, there is not a single entrepreneur that doesn’t have to take risks over and over again. Learning to manage them is important…
I always say I’m willing to be risky but I’m not going to be reckless – and I think that has kept me grounded in some way.
