Life & Work with Courtney Stewart

Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Stewart.

Hi Courtney, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always been really interested in the videos that you see on social media of people decorating cookies- I actually find them to be really therapeutic. Last Christmas (2020), I decided to give it a go at just decorating simple cookies like gingerbread men and snowflakes and I was instantly hooked. I started to offer to do free cookie sets for my friend’s kids’ birthdays just to keep practicing and see what I was really capable of. I started posting on social media and people started asking to pay me to make cookies for their events and now I am taking 5-6 orders per week and turning away orders because I am too busy.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
For the most part, it’s been a pretty smooth road. There are definitely some learning curves just with icing consistency and decorating techniques, but I feel like I am getting the hang of it watching video tutorials on Instagram and YouTube. I’ve definitely burned, broken and trashed my fair share of cookies, which can be super frustrating, but it’s all part of the process. I would definitely say my biggest struggle is the amount of time I have to dedicate to cookies. I work full time as a nurse- so I only decorate cookies when I am off in the evenings and into the late nights. I try really hard to have a good work/life/cookie balance- but am still struggling figuring it all out.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My specialty is creating custom-decorated sugar cookies for clients for occasions ranging from birthdays to baby showers to weddings! I’ve been lucky enough to be a part of so many people’s special days in such a short period of time- and can’t wait to continue to help make memories. I take the inspiration, theme and color palettes that customers give me and do my best to make their vision come to life. Along with special occasions, I also have sales every major holiday for designated holiday sets.

Courtney made a cookie painting kit for my daughter’s recent party. Coloring between the lines was great fun and the bonus was getting to eat my art.

Courtney and her art are treasures.
