Life & Work with Amber Arrington

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Arrington.

Hi Amber, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started Sugar N Spiced Collections in 2016 right after I graduated from high school. I come from a family of entrepreneurs and small business owners, so once I entered in adulthood it was something that was in my blood. My brand is inspired based upon my identification as a woman in the world. My style has always been that “cozy but sexy” look and as I got older, I realized how many other women had that same identification. I want Sugar N Spiced to represent women of all body types and show how a brand can serve a timeless looks to a size small as well a size 2XL. In my opinion, I believe that as a women I feel the most empowered when my outfit is fire. Throughout the past five years, I’ve hosted three networking events surrounding women entrepreneurs and small business owners in general to bring exposure to businesses just like my own. It took a lot of late night studying, research, failure, succession, and faith to get me where I am today. Also, I wouldn’t have come thus far without the inspiring and driven individuals I’ve met along my journey. Just this summer, I’ve had the luxury to teach entrepreneurship to young teens and be a vendor at two very successful networking events in Baltimore with (@aacebooogie and @skyeisthelimitclothing_ on Instagram). All three had amazing turnouts and brought me endless connections that created the opportunity for me to open a storefront location very soon. I’m going to hold off on any more details but it’s coming really, really soon and I’ll definitely be having a networking event as a grand opening for sure. Apart from me wanting to be a successful business owner, I dream for my city (Baltimore) to empower each other to work for themselves.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, the road has been extremely rocky. I’ve run into countless financial issues within the startup phase. Also, not being in a positive mind frame with myself trickled down into my business. I feel like to be a successful entrepreneur, you have to be balanced in the mind.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’ve worked since I was 16. I’ve been so eager since a kid to have my own money and make it myself. That drive has put me in a lot of great job opportunities at a young age. My passion for retail has been a huge part of my tact, diplomacy, and organization within my own business currently. I’ve done visual merchandising to managing store locations and have observed endless profiting business tactics. So I’ll say what I’m most proud of is my willingness to obtain knowledge. I’m only 23 and feel like I have a mindset of a wise 40-year old. I’ve learned and the great part about it is I’m still learning.

What’s next?
Like I’ve mentioned before, I’m planning to open a storefront really soon. It’s time and I’m ready. I also just moved to PA this past month and it’s my first time living out of Maryland. Very huge change for me but I have a one-year-old and I want a better environment for her. So now I’m on a new journey of expanding my business there. I literally don’t know anyone, so no resources and connections like in Maryland. I plan on doing some networking and vendor events there to build a steady clientele base. I will still be doing business ventures in the DMV area of course but I’m thinking global with my business.
