Today we’d like to introduce you to Shanda Brown.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Despite leaving a stable job after 10+ years, watching my 8-year-old brother die at the age of 12, watching my mother in law bleed to death after routine surgery, and working in an environment riddled with trauma, mental health challenges, and addiction, and having 9 miscarriages over a span of 8 years – I was in need of self-care.
The problem–self-care in the fashion that I knew it (massages, dates with friends, etc. wasn’t working). I needed something more. I did a lot of self-reflecting and took some professional advice that I would give to my clients. So I begin to recall my own history of trauma and how it has influenced the woman I am today.
That motivated me to expand my view of self-care and take a whole approach. With this change, I began to see immediate results. I was earning more (an extra 50k+ in the pandemic alone). I felt better. I went from having not enough time in the day to do the things I loved to more than enough time in the day for those things. I felt rested! I felt renewed! I was inspired to help others do the same.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
Struggles along the way included: Being a first time mom so learning and adjusting to raising a child while working a 9 to 5 and building a business. The biggest struggle was finding more time and self-care helped me to do that. Diving into the wellness business it was difficult finding my niche audience because I want my brand to have my voice, Branding/Marketing, Finding support , testing + developing products, overcoming fear etc. Yes there were lots of struggles. But self-care is embracing the struggle rather than succumbing to it.
As you know, we’re big fans of Zen LATELY . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Zen LATELY we take a MIND + BODY + SPIRIT + FINANCE Approach. I recognized after many years that I was doing my clients a disservice by not addressing their financial stress. I knew from personal and professional experience the stress that’s caused when you mishandled your finances.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Getting to the ROOT of your stressors is self-care. Stop seeking immediate gratification from massages, travel, date nights, etc. only to come back to the same stressors you had. Instead of escaping from life, build the life you don’t have to escape from.
