Today we’d like to introduce you to Sara Bowen.
Hi Sara, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I began my esthetics journey by actually doing makeup. Everyone would always comment on how good I did my own and then I branched out by doing friends and family through word of mouth, for proms weddings, parties, and date nights. I did that for about 3 years before I decided I wanted to take it to the next level and establish more of a professional career out of it. That’s when I decided to enroll in Von Lee international school of esthetics, originally wanting to further my makeup skill. What most people don’t know is I learned how to be good at makeup by covering my own imperfections with having a constant battle with cystic acne most of my life, so learning skincare would not only help me with my own skin struggles but would also help me pass on my knowledge to others who were having their own skin concerns as well. It’s really been rewarding seeing my clients’ skin get healthier and watching their confidence build up. I can’t imagine doing anything else! I’ve been at the salon and spa I’m currently at for 5 years and I couldn’t be happier I love the relationships I have been able to establish with my clients to help them achieve their skin care goals by using corrective skin care products and treatments. I also do some of what I like to call the fun stuff in the beauty industry like lashes, brows, and waxing which can make a huge confidence boost as well, I love a good before and after!
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Honestly, the beauty industry is so large and I think you have to really figure out what works best for you. Whether it’s working in a salon and spa or working for yourself, also do you really want to provide every service from A-Z. Find out what you are passionate about and go for it. The esthetics industry is always evolving and there are so many things we can do but it also gets to be a lot keeping up with every possible new service we can offer. I’ve been certified in makeup, multiple types of lash services, spray tanning, body and skincare treatments that at the end of the day I needed to do what makes me happy and what I really want to focus on for myself and for my clients. If there’s one piece of advice I could offer to anyone starting out is don’t give up, it’s not easy in the beginning but it will get easier.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Lavish Salon and Spa?
I am a licensed esthetician and I have been working at Lavish salon and spa in Fallston for the past 5 years. I offer an in-depth variety of esthetic services such as lash lifts and extensions, brow shaping and design, and specialize in anti-aging, pigmentation, and acne skin care management. Staying on top of education is so important for me, not only for myself but to relay to my clients so they can feel confident when they leave the treatment room and have the proper home care knowledge. I use medical-grade skincare along with advanced technology to deliver amazing results to my clients. I also like to use a more holistic approach and establish the root cause of many skincare concerns. I’m proud that I am able to bring such amazing skincare products to so many people to help them achieve amazing results and healthier skin.
We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
Spending summers with my family going on day trips. My parents always kept us learning during the summer and would do educational trips but it was fun a plus side is they had us keep journals and write down what we did on trips/vacations so we could look back and read our memories. It always puts a smile on my face seeing my handwriting from when I was young and trying to spell out new words!
