Inspiring Conversations with Roxie ICON of 10 Skyn

Today we’d like to introduce you to Roxie ICON.

Hi Roxie, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My interest in skincare started when I began a part-time job at Origins in the Baltimore inner harbor at the gallery. At the time, I was also pursuing a career in music which introduced me to makeup! I pursued music for about ten years and then decided I wanted to become a makeup artist. I refined my makeup artistry skills as a freelance artist with MAC cosmetics. I stayed there for six months and soon after discovered it was really skincare I was most interested in. I enrolled in a seven months esthetics program full-time at Steiner Institute in Lithicum, MD. I became a licensed esthetician within nine months. After completing my state exam, I was lucky to be able to start my esthetic career with Zena’s Day Spa in the Mount Vernon neighborhood. I instantly had a full book and was learning so much really fast.

Six months at Zena’s taught me everyone needed to know to launch my own boutique spa. When I left the salon, I had maybe 5 or 6 clients that continued to come to me for services. They were friends and family who’d supported me along the way. It was really hard in the beginning to build a clientele that was my own but I stayed the course. I was rented a suite in Federal Hill at Phoenix Salon suites. The other tenants there were very supportive. Everyone referred their clients and before I knew it, I had a full book. It was a blessing! I was able to bring in another esthetician and help her build her clientele as well. Soon after, I knew I’d need more space. I wanted to keep growing and provide employment for other beauty professionals. I stayed in Fed Hill for two years before finding the Charles Village location. It was perfect! We now have a staff of five beauty experts including myself. We specialize in Skincare, Natural Enhancements (lash extensions, permanent brow makeup, etc.) and Non-Invasive Body Contouring. My goal is to expand 10 Skyn into a global brand and I’d say we’re on the right track.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The biggest obstacle was finding out I was pregnant not long after I left Zena’s to do my own thing. I didn’t really have a solid clientele base and was just breaking even with the rent and STILL needed to purchase supplies and tools to provide services. Not to mention pay my personal bills. I don’t know how I managed it all. I didn’t really even think about it. I’ve learned during this journey that I am VERY adaptable. During my pregnancy is when I reached out to my Esty friend and asked her to come aboard. After I had my baby, I worked part-time and so did she. We split the week in half and that’s how I stayed afloat. I was able to keep the business going and stay home with my little boy.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about 10 Skyn?
We specialize is Lux Skincare Services and Beauty Enhancement. We offer treatments for the face and body. Facials, lash extensions, waxing, body contouring, permanent makeup, skin tightening, etc. I think what sets us apart is the standard of care and effort we put into serving each of our clients. That is what I am most proud of and value the most.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
For anyone just starting out, I’d say hold steady, stay firm, don’t be afraid to ask for help and take a break if you need to but don’t quit. Everything you want or need to know to move forward is always attainable. You just have to seek the information and do the work.
